sven took england to 3 quarter finals in a row and got the sack , seems gareth peaked now and it's pretty obvious he isn't able to manage in a final. dreadful substitutions

I don’t see the value in finishing with a young side, you don’t think are good enough to do the business.

And then expecting those poor saps to take penalties.

The reverse would have made more sense. Much more.

Play with no fear and then penalties with experience.

Ah well. That old familiar sting.

Thank god I’m a a Reading fan

Who were the experienced penalty takers in the squad?

Rashford used to take them at United and has been in the Utd first team for about 5 years

Sancho has played high-level CL with BD (140 appearances, 50 goals)

I know it`s over now, but how pissed off I was with the camera angle for the pen shoot outs. it almost takes away the excitement of the moment.

I thought Federico Chiesa was frighteningly good.

Southgate had a flawless tournament up until last night. I wasn't convinced by the choice of formation, but for the first 20 minutes Trippier and Shaw were running rings around them. However, it was obvious from the 30th minute or so that we were getting pushed deeper and deeper and needed an extra body in midfield to compete higher up the pitch. It was a similar story to Croatia in 2018, except this time we had options on the bench who could change things and we have familiarity with multiple systems. Southgate had the tools to affect the game he didn't have in 2018, but didn't use them. Ultimately, we still only lost on penalties.

He's still doing a fantastic job and I back him and our team to learn from it. Any major tournament is very hard to win and will always have several top teams involved, but we will be right in the mix for the next few.

We don't see what they've been like in training either. If Rashford, Sancho and Saka have scored 95% and Henderson, Sterling and Grealish 20% who would you pick. Maybe question the order in which they take them and have Maguire taking the 5th.

In my mind you have your better penalty takers first up to try and get an advantage and that worked.

Rashford hits his pen about 6 inches right and the chances are Sara is strolling up to win it rather than stay in it. Big difference decided by small margins.

Didn't find the early group games very exciting but from the 3rd group games onwards through the knockout games the do-or-die element worked as it should and upped things hugely. Overall it gets a big thumbs up from me (despite the final result)

And as pretty much everyone has said, the refs were a very decent standard and VAR was a disaster, which is an improvement.

Only just seeing videos and reports from placed like Leicester Square and parts of Wembley last night. There's a video of proper hooligans fighting in Wembley before we've even lost; a grown man punches a kid who can only be 14 or 15. I'd love to say it's a minority, but in the pub I was at there were boos for the national anthem and lads shouting "no surrender" in God Save the Queen. In 2022, we'll be inviting friends around ours to watch the games to escape the unpleasant atmosphere.

This England team are a credit to the nation and reflect everything we should be proud of, but there is still loads to do. And as for the people on Saka's Instagram, surely it's time to start tracking down those who post this shit and prosecute them.

I think watching England in one of the fan parks might be my idea of hell on Earth. Loads of pissed up tradesmen giving it the big one and lobbing beers all over the place. Get fcuked.

I'd be interested to see Suze's take on the atmosphere

It's also time to retire that bloody song

I am quite surprised at the scale of the trouble tbh. With beer and camera phones there are always going to be incidents captured on film, but those will generally be isolated things and will be much more about some blokes not being able to cope with drinking than anything else. But some of the stuff yesterday was quite shocking. The people trying to force their way into the ground are not a small group of mates, its a sizable crowd of people.

In the past I have always written off criticism of our football/beery crowd trouble as something that probably happens elsewhere anyway and we just don't see it reported. But I am starting to think this countries belmont element may be a fair bit bigger than other nations

I'm relieved we won't be hosting any major tournaments for the foreseeable future to be honest.

Getting overly patriotic, I'm convinced that those scenes are not representative of the values we hold as a country, and several thousand fans is still actually only a tiny fraction of the 30 million viewers on TV. But the scenes and social media abuse just look so awful and upsetting, and have probably upset me more than the result.
