We had to settle for just three wins from twenty-two Reading FC fixtures in the first half of the season - and now we've had five wins in the space of just six games. The season is threatening to play out like another Brian McDermott classic. We looked doomed until the 29th December when a mini-revival began and has given us real hope of staying in the Premier League this season. The possibility of getting somewhere in the FA Cup is an exciting bonus.
Reading followed up their third round victory over Crawley Town with a 4-0 home victory against Sheffield United in round four this afternoon. It was a comfortable victory and not as exciting as the comprehensive scoreline suggested. Reading took an early lead through Noel Hunt, found brief resistance from the visitors who threatened to pull level before Leigertwood's goal before half time killed the game. Two more goals, early in the second half from Hunt and McCleary, sealed the win.
The two FA Cup games might have been against League One opposition, and we might have been expected to win them, but they all count and are all important confidence boosters ahead of the important business of staying up.
Obviously Wednesday's game against Chelsea will be altogether different. We might well expect to lose that but still have the possibility of keeping Premier League wins on the agenda with the visits of Wigan, Aston Villa and Soutampton coming round fast.
