Reading began life without Brian McDermott with a sixth straight defeat at Old Trafford. However, this was an unexpectedly narrow away defeat against the side just weeks away being crowned the 2012/2013 Premier League Champions. Manchester United picked up the three points thanks to a single goal midway through the first half - an effort from Wayne Rooney that was deflected past Taylor and into the net. Reading rallied late on and pushed for an equaliser - and again we were denied a penalty as the Royal showed plenty of fighting spirit. Caretaker boss Eamonn Dolan would have been pleased with the performance but perhaps disappointed with the result in what is likely to be his only game in charge - for now at least.
Despite the impressive showing after the turmoil of the past week, Reading now find themselves well adrift of safety on the back of such a poor run. The Royals are now seven points away from safety with just eight games remaining - the next of which is Arsenal away. Mathematically the season isn't yet over but only a miracle can prevent Reading playing Championship football next season.
