The Premier League's two worst sides - Reading and QPR - meet this weekend at the Madejski Stadium in what is effectively a play-off for the bottom position. Both teams are on terrible runs and are well adrift at the foot of the table. The two teams are separated only by goal difference with Reading currently holding 20th position. Reading have picked up a huge one point from the last nine league fixtures. QPR are without a win in five games. If it was possible for both sides to lose this fixture then that would be the most likely outcome.
Although neither team is mathematically relegated just yet, a defeat for either side will definitely confirm relegation to the Championship. A victory will also be useless at this stage of the season with only an impossible set of results combining to save either of these doomed teams. In theory, with both teams down, save the maths, this is a meaningless end of season fixture with very little at stake. It would be disappointing if Reading viewed it in that way though. Reading should be desperate for a victory to end one of the worst runs in their entire club history. New manager Nigel Adkins is starting to no longer be considered new after over-seeing four league games already - three defeats and one draw. Adkins has seen his team score just 2 - both late consolations - and concede 8. Surely there's no better opportunity for Adkins to improve on his managerial stats at Reading than a home fixture against QPR. QPR will surely fancy a rare win themselves, but Sunday's TV audience are unlikely to be in for a classic.
Winning has been a rare experience for Reading fans this season, but one notable win did come at QPR early in the season - it was a shame it was in the League Cup when we could have done with the league points. Our meeting in the Premier League ended in a 1-1 draw with Gorkss on the scoresheet.
