Adam Le Fondre has completed his signing for Championship side Cardiff City. The transfer fee is believed to be two million pounds, which may seem a reasonable fee for a player who signed for 300,000 pounds and had a year left to run on his contract with Reading FC.
The media are, quite rightly, reporting that it highlights Reading's "urgent need for cash". It also draws further attention to Reading's squad that continues to weaken more and more since the end of last season. Despite talk of new owners at Reading FC there is no firm news there, as the new season creeps closer. It seems increasingly likely that Reading will be relying on academy players to boost a small squad - which will mean no transfer fees and much reduced wage bills heading into the new campaign.
The departure of Adam Le Fondre, last season's top scorer, makes it clear the club are accepting reasonable offers for key players in the squad. Therefore it seems only a matter of time before players like Alex McCarthy, already the subject of continual transfer rumour, follow him out of the door.
