Reading so nearly produced their first League win of the season after out-playing Newcastle United at the Madejski Stadium. Reading should have picked up the full three points but were denied by a late equaliser off the arm of Newcastle's Ba. It was a harsh outcome for Reading who had led for most of the second half and looked much the better side in their best performance of the season so far.
The first half was uneventful but the game exploded into life in the second half. McAnuff, Hob Nob Anyone?'s man of the match, set up Kebe to start with. Kebe beat his defender and finished well. However the lead was short lived as Ba blasted home inside a minute. McAnuff didn't let up though and was the supplier once more within a couple of minutes. His cross was met by Hunt who headed home to put Reading 2-1 up. Reading looked set for victory until Ba guided the ball past McCarthy with his arm with seven minutes left to play. There was still time for Reading to claim a fair win - and they nearly did when Roberts forced a save and McAnuff hit the post. Luck was clearly not with Reading and they were forced to pick up just a point to move them off the very foot of the Premier League table.
