Back In Bottom Three After Late Winner For Wigan

It was another disappointing afternoon for the Royals at Wigan as they, once again, failed to hold a lead. Reading were a goal up at half time, but a dramatic second half saw the home side run out 3-2 winners after Jordi Gomez scored a hat-trick including a late winner deep into stoppage time at the end of the game. A draw would have been a good result at a side just above Reading in the table, but the defeat, after leading, will go down as a poor outcome with Reading slipping back into the bottom three and Wigan moving five points clear of the Royals. It's still reasonably early days, but Reading's record of a single victory from twelve games leaves them deep in relegation trouble.

Reading fans were hoping for better after taking the lead ten minutes before the break. Once more, Nicky Shorey was the provider with a free-kick lifted into the box. Sean Morrison connected to head home, for his first Premier League goal, and put Reading in an excellent position at half time. It was a feeling of deja vu all afternoon for Reading. The first half was mostly uneventful but saw the home side frustrated after missing a couple of good chances - putting one wide and seeing Shorey save Federici with a clearance off the line. The second was similar to so many this season, with the game springing into life and the opposition taking full advantage to condemn Reading to defeat.

Wigan were level on 58 minutes when Gomez scored from the rebound when Federici blocked his first effort. It was two just ten minutes later when Gomez headed his second. Robson-Kanu gave Reading hope of a point with eleven minutes to play when his effort bounced off the keeper and into the net to make it 2-2. But Reading failed to see out the game for a point and the almost inevitable injury time winner came from Gomez from close range.
