Swift Grabs Win With Christmas Cracker

A brilliant long range strike by John Swift after fifty-two minutes proved to be the difference between the teams in an open and action packed encounter at the Madjeski Stadium this evening. Reading moved up to fifteenth place in the table following this, their second home victory and clean sheet in successive home games. Both 'keepers were kept on their toes as the game ebbed and flowed with both teams creating ample chances to have won comfortably. There was a lot of space in midfield which neither team exploited fully over the ninety minutes. Reading had to defend well, desperately at times towards the end, to hang on to all three points.

Royals Up To Sixteenth With Win Over 10 Man Derby

Reading finally overcame an undisciplined rabble of a Derby side which imploded following Reading's second, and superbly created, goal from Joao. The tone of the game was set in a feisty opening when Meite was bundled over in the box by Malone when put through on goal by Joao's astute pass. Malone was correctly shown a red card and Charlie Adam converted the penalty emphatically. County struggling to win away from home were a goal down and reduced to ten men within the opening four minutes. Obviously the odds were stacked heavily in favour of a Reading win, but it was a far from comfortable win for the Royals.

Birmingham Take Three Points

A dismal display at home against Birmingham side without a win in five games has given manager Mark Bowen food for thought about the overall strength and deployment of the squad at his disposal to pull away for the lower reaches of the Championship. The score line might suggest a narrow defeat, but in fact there were some worrying aspects of the overall performance of his team this afternoon. The nature of City's second and third goals underline significant weaknesses in what is Reading's third defeat in the last four games.
