Interesting story about Ray Parlour

by Stretts » 08 Jun 2010 17:23

Heard this on Talk Sport today from Ray Parlour.

It was 1998 and Arsenal had just won the double. Ray Parlour was on top of his game and had just been voted as Arsenal's player of the year. Anyway just before they announced the 1998 World Cup squad he pulled a calf muscle and was told he would need 2-3 weeks off. he thought this would ruin his chances of getting in the WC squad, so he spoke to Glen Hoddle and Glen sent him to Irene Drury to see if she could do something.

He was very sceptical of faith healing and she told him to sit down and relax. She put her hands on his head, and he quipped "short back and sides" please. Apparently she laughed at the joke. Then she started touching his calf and "thinking" it better.

Anyway it did no good whatsoever and he had 2 weeks out. When the squad for a pre WC friendly was announced Parlour was left out. He thought, "fair enough, perhaps he wants to try out some different players". When the preliminary WC squad was named, he was left out of that as well. He spoke to Arsen Wenger who was surprised, and Arsen rang up Glen Hoddle to find out why.

Hoddle said "Parlour will never play for England as long as I am manager". When Parlour contacted Hoddle to find out why, Hoddle told him that it was true because he had disrespected his faith, by making a quip about a haircut when with Irene Drury.

True story.

Stretton Royal When using the word "interesting" in the title, it was of course, wrong.

The short back and sides bit is 100 per cent true. Parlour spoke about it on Soccer Am a couple of years back. I'm not sure about the Hoddle being pissed bit though.

That's a different twist on it, but it's certainly based in truth. Actually interesting too.

More evidence that Hoddle is a tool of the highest order.

We had a lucky escape when Mr Mad considered him as a replacement for Pardew.

Weren't we interested in him before we appointed Pardew?

I understand that the Scorpions were particularly keen that he should be appointed.

Matt Le Tissier was particularly scathing about Hoddle at the recent Sportsman's Dinner.

American slang, you mean. In this country we say p*ssed-off. Try giving drivel like Scrubs a miss.
