FA Cup away day memories

I did two Cup away days with the supporters club in the 70's.

Wealdstone has already been reported on in extenso. Got beat 2-1, George Duck scored 2 for them. We all ran back to the coaches because Aldershot had about 20 hooligans there to attack us. "Run, they're coming". True story.

Hereford away 1976 (?), they were two divisions above us. Glamour tie for us. We had a supporters club train. Didn't have a shot all game iirc, we lost 1-0. Trouble in their end at half time, apparently Black Russian (Reading/Chelsea's finest) had got in there.

Slough in 1991 - remember the PA announcer asking the Reading fans to stop jumping up and down as the wall at the front of the terrace was (and did) collapse. Was a bit of a conspiracy theory going around at the time, that the club had thrown the game to allow Slough a money-spinning replay - though only 6.5k turned up as it was an all ticket game.

Didn't go to either, watched them both on the TV, but the two replays at Liverpool and West Brom in 2010 must live long in the memory of those who were there.

Remember an away day to Grimsby in 89. They were bottom of the league and outplayed us. We were trying our hardest to get relegated from Division 3 (saved on the final day by Chesterfield gifting us 4 second half goals from 2-0 up). Coppers drafted in from Scunthorpe ensured a lively afternoon in the away end. We escaped Cleethorpes with a replay and a feisty police escort courtesy of a totally undeserved injury time equaliser which prompted a full time pitch invasion by a large group of disgruntled apprentice trawlermen looking for a fight.

Cue the replay and the prize of an away trip to the holders awaits the winners. (Calm down, it was Wimbledon). Outplayed again but got a totally undeserved equaliser in the last 10 minutes only for Gilkesy to gift them a winner with a woefully underhit backpass about 90 seconds later.

Fondly remember Slough as well. My mate had a Bic safety razor confiscated by the police.

That game was grim. Stam unveiling the 4-6-0 formation. At least one throw in went straight back out again.

We've played Stevenage a fair bit as well recently

Losing a 2nd round replay vs York, then losing to them again the next season: desolation.

The best bit was Souness at the end! Giving it large until Big Clive stood in front of him. Looked like an angry toddler with a tache.

Christ, that was bad. When Trevor Senior scored the late winner, bricks were flying everywhere. Me and my uncle just grabbed each other and got the hell out. Mad Cardiff cu nts were jumping all over our coach. Bedlam.

Talking of City,1968 0-0 at Maine Road, anticipating a giant-killing back at Elm Park.
Little did we know that City had a real off-day in the first game but didn't they turn it on in the replay?
7-0 and it could have been more.
We didn't know until that night that we were watching a City side destined to be FA Cup winners and Top Division champions-their subsequent successful period was no great surprise.

I'll throw in Pompey away in 1978.
We won 1-0 (John Alexander) and looked good in a season when we went on to be champions.
The following week we went back there and got stuffed 4-0.

1997 away at Sheff Utd on a Friday night (13th!!) and we lost 1-0 in the last minute when IIRC Linvoy failed to clear the ball.
