Sounds like his main asset is his pace and work rate but jury’s out on his technical ability which lacks consistency and the maturity you would want in a midfielder. Great if he’s for depth, not so great if we’re hoping to start him 46 games in the championship.
I don’t see why being from the lower leagues makes a player automatically more hungry though. John Swift came from Chelsea known as just a youth prospect, in his four years with us he’s matured and has become known as one of the most technically gifted players in the championship.

I was going to say exactly this. Happy with this signing.
E too, happy with this bit of business if it comes off

So from what I gather from this forum, people don't want us to buy:
Premier League cast offs
Premier League young loanees
Experienced, older free agents
Foreigners with no Championship experience
Players who have been relegated
Players from the lower leagues
... who exactly does that leave us with?

Well, I think we can safely say that basically no one thinks we should avoid all of those.
So it's a question of who is right.

The best players from our rivals?
But we would require money for that, and this is quite possibly the worst period in football (since the war) football has seen. We may even be witnessing the long overdue regulation within the game, so...
Highly rated players from lower leagues who can make the step up, would be the Reading way. And I would be happy with that.

The good thing about quality players from the lower leagues, is if you get relegated you know they can cut it.
PL loanees / cast offs, foreign league players and championship nearly men - you can't be so sure.

I hope our transfer policy doesn’t stoop to buying players who would be ok if they were not good enough to keep us in this division !

Well, if the media are to be believed, and this move does happen, then Reading beat off interest from Stoke, Swansea and Cardiff so there must be some confidence in the guy’s ability at Championship level.

Right kind of signing if we make it. Wingers should be next on my agenda.

Worked his way up the leagues on loan. Rotherham, Swindon, Brentford, Reading..................

25 years old, can play in a DM role or CB role.....useful. Can't see him as a starter though.

Contingency planning innit.
Cheaper so less financial problem on relegation, already proven at that level.
You may scoff, but for a team semi-consistently flirting with relegation it's not a bad safety net compared to
- a PL loanee who'll have oxf*rd off and contributed balls all if they're similarly a failure
- a PL failure who'll have also failed - probably because of work ethic and commitment rather than talent so not much more likely to succeed in L1, and will cost more
- a Champ also ran who'll have failed, probably due to a combination of talent and work ethic, so will be more costly and also not much more likely to succeed at L1
Plus, it' not like you're signing him with the expectation he'll fail are you. It's because he's got a good combination of chances to succeed and value. Give me a player with a track record of success, even at a lower level, over one without, every time.
Have to wait and see how midfield shapes up. He may just be Rino's understudy.

I don’t think that’s quite the same thing to be honest. Very rarely do you find a youth player good enough for the championship that hasn’t played in the lower leagues.
