Samuels getting dropped for Bristow is a particularly dramatic example of a new manager making a snap judgement. In this case, pretty innocent, but they can really swing a player’s career. Strange that Melvin Lambert was given a squad number but has still never played for the U23s. Also that Samuels travelled with the first team all pre-season, then immediately dropped behind Bristow.

It's almost like something changed at the club between pre-season and the first game.

I guess the squad number were submitted a while before being released too, so Bowen maybe had a part in those.
