Players on international duty

by Clyde1998 » 21 May 2024 17:33

Couldn't seem to find a general thread for our players on international duty, so I though I'd create one.

Looking over the summer, it's possible a number of our players will be away.

New Zealand play in the Oceania Nations Cup, so Bindon will probably be involved in that. New Zealand also feature in the Olympics, so if Bindon's also involved in that he could miss the start of the league season (final of the tournament being 9th August).

Dorsett will probably be away too: Monserrat play two World Cup qualifiers against Nicaragua and Panama.

Charlie Savage could be in the Wales squad for their friendlies against Gibraltar and Slovakia. Rushesha appeared in the previous Zimbabwe squad; they have two World Cup qualifiers.

Ben Elliott has not been included in Cameroon's squad.

Strange with Elliott - was getting picked when not playing regularly, breaks through as a regular, dropped by his country.

Can only assume it is because of the fact he won't have played for over a month by the time of the games.

Could be a fitness thing or the manager has decided to look at some different players (or even the manager has changed).

Ah does look like a new manager and these will be his first games in charge - he may not be too interested in a player playing 3rd tier English football.

I find the coach's tactics inappropriate, most Cameroon players play in tournaments on par with the English 3rd division, there is not much difference.

CBBC called up by Jamaica for World Cup qualifiers against the Dominican Republic and Dominica next week. He is joined in the same squad by Michael Hector and Mikhail Antonio.

Good to see he's involved again. IIRC, this is the first time he's been in the Jamaica squad since his injury.

Can't agree with that at all. It isn't 1986 any more, most Cameroon international players are playing in European top flights.

They called up a 30-man squad. Three play in the Premier League (including Carlos Baleba who is younger than Elliott and plays in midfield for Brighton), four play in Ligue 1, two play in Serie A, one in the German Bundesliga, and one in La Liga. Another ten play in the Turkish, Greek, Russian, Ukrainian, Serbian, or Bulgarian top flights. Bulgaria is the only one of those I think you could argue is worse than the Championship.

One is playing in the Spanish second division, which it seems reasonable to conclude is likely to be better than the English third tier.

They then have one in China, one in the US, one in Qatar and one in Saudi. The Saudi PL is obviously much stronger than the Championship. The MLS is obviously much stronger than League One. Hard to say for the other two. Lots of money in Qatar but they are feeding off scraps.

There are two players playing domestic Cameroonian football and one playing in DR Congo.

And beyond the 30-man squad, there's no shortage of other players playing at the highest level in France or Switzerland.

Charlie Savage starts as Wales become the first top 50 ranked nation to fail to beat Gibraltar.

Makes Scotland's 2-0 win against them look like an impressive result.

Tbf you have to remember this is a team in transition. Half the squad have only been selected in the last 12 months. Scanlon and Bartolo only made their debuts for Gibraltar in March.

You wouldn't think Gibraltar would have the talent pool though. Wales did beat them 4-0 back in October, but obviously a lot of the young players have had an impact and will be improving.

Noticed Gibraltar have four teenagers in their 24 man squad - three are at English league clubs, including Scanlon at Man Utd. That's on top of players in their early-to-mid twenties like Annesley, who was at Blackburn, and De Barr, who was at Wycombe. Those younger players coming through will be among the first to have gone all the UEFA youth levels, so will have had meaningful competition from much younger ages than the older players. A lot of those older players seem to have dropped out the squad recently too.

Gibraltar have seemed to among the best of the small European nations - seem to be better than San Marino and Liechtenstein and regularly getting decent results against Andorra, Malta and the Faroes. Still seems a poor result for Wales, who are also in a transition (albeit a smaller one).

CBC on the bench for Jamaica in their World Cup qualifier against Dominican Republic - 1-0 to Jamaica after an hour. They also travel to Dominica on Sunday.

Jeriel Dorsett played the whole ninety minutes for Montserrat in their 4-1 defeat away to Nicaragua yesterday. Their next match is at home to Panama on Sunday.
