So, when in every other division fielding an in eligible player is a points deduction, how do Sunderland just get a fine?

The FA's rules specify that a points deduction can be waived where the offence relates to tardy completion of international registration. Would only have been a point anyway.

Bit of a stupid rule having to go through the whole international registration again when its a player that you already own just coming back from being on loan. You'd think the international registration for the loan club would just have been for a fixed period which automatically reverted back to the parent club at the end of the loan.

It does seem a let off when AFC Wimbledon were docked 18th pts for loaning a player from Cardiff (playing in the championship) and not getting international (Welsh FA) clearance

Not only did he play in 4 league games, but also in a capital One Cup victory; a tournament that Sunderland got to the Final of and made a fair amount of money from.

The reality is that, a Premier League or "big" team who breaks these sort of rules will always be treated leniently (ie: West ham over Tevez & QPR - who were just about to be promoted to the Prem - over Faurlin) because the football authorities are petrified that they will be taken to Court and sued over it. Small clubs (such as AFC Wimbledon) are less likely to.

The fun and games will start if Sunderland survive by a point; I can't imagine that nice Mr Tan at Cardiff going "Oh well, c'est la vie!"

:D

In the lower Step Leagues, lesser offences have cost teams relegation ....for example:

Ji-Dong Won

by stealthpapes » 06 May 2014 11:45

So I've not really followed the intricacies of the league this season but I was surprised at

If Gus Poyet thought life was tough at the bottom of the Barclays Premier League, it got a whole lot worse when it emerged that Sunderland fielded Ji Dong-won in four top-flight matches when he was ineligible.

Club secretary Liz Coley departed abruptly after the administrative error left Sunderland facing a Premier League investigation for breaching rules B14.5 and U11.

The League have fined the club substantially but not deducted points despite an FA statute saying they should have been docked or made to replay their game against Southampton in August, when Ji helped them win a point.

Sunderland were also fined by the Football League after striker Ji played in a 4-2 victory over MK Dons in the Capital One Cup when he wasn’t eligible to play.
MK Dons are understood to be furious that Sunderland were not thrown out of the competition once the error was spotted.
They went on to lose in the final against Manchester City.

You go down the leagues and look at the other teams that have broken this sort of rule and faced severe points deductions (18 in the case of Altrincham Town, iirc) and this is lunacy. I also understand that it was done on the quiet side which is even more ludicrous.

Anyway.

Liz Coley

Agree with the sentiment as to how this was dealt with. Iirc, the leniency is because there was a small, unintentional omission in the form completed for international clearance when Dong returned from a loan spell in Germany. It's still wrong, yes - but it was an admin error in a form the club did complete in good faith, wasn't like they just didn't register him in time yet played him anyway.*

*which is, technically, what Altrincham did, albeit they were stiffed by Accrington, who signed a player from Iceland and only played him in their reserves, before selling him on to Altrincham without the clearance.

Isn't this the ex Reading youngster that we couldn't keep because of a permit?
