Blimey look how well Brentford have have done after a slow start.
Bowen is doing ok. He is a bit too defensive minded but it’s difficult to argue with fifth in the table since he took over.
He is also playing Academy boys too. Four starters today.

Mark. Just sort out the home form and we will be flying because away from home is record is top notch.

He’d a given us a good solid base, reduced the reliance on the expensive players and brought through the academy lads

The entertainment is lacking at times but from where we were I’ll take it

What's moronic about it?

It's a good stat but ultimately means oxf*rd all. We are not anywhere near the playoffs.

If you rescue a drowning man does he complain because he’s not in an Olympic Swimming Final?

And if Reading’s home form wasn’t so indifferent the club would actually be around Fulham and WBA in that table and, more importantly, actually in with a chance of 6th in the real world.

Overall I think MB is arguably the first manager in ages Reading have had going into a new season who actually convinces a little that he knows what he’s doing, is honest and open when talking and doesn’t appear to be frightened to drop players who don’t perform.

To some extent he’s had to deal with a larger squad than he wants, financial issues, complete confusion and uncertainty caused by the current pandemic and persistent injuries to Joao who seems to be fairly key in want he wants to do with the team in an attacking sense.

At least there’s reasonable grounds for hope amongst supporters that next season might see a club capable of challenging for a top 10 place, just have to hope the summer provides for opportunities in the transfer market to enable MB to start finalising the pieces to give us all a team to be proud of once again.

And please god, whatever happens, let the home form at least be decent next time round.

Under Gomez, we would probably have been relegated.

Under Bowen, we will finish mid table.

Bowen was certainly not everyone's first choice, but the bloke has done OK. Lest not forget, we were 2-2-8 when we took over.
A terrible start, and heading towards the third tier. And now, we will finish mid-table...possibly even top half.
Bowen should be congratulated...the chap has done well. Credit where it is due.

He was one person’s first choice. And if the Director of Football thinks you are the man for,the job then chances are you will get it.
I think it has been a decent appointment, not massively exciting but then that’s not what we needed. We needed sensible, steady, pragmatic. I hope he can I inject a bit of excitement next season, we’ve got the makings of a solid defensive unit and a good sprinkling of flair players and as long as the transfer dealings inand out don’t wreck things we’ll be heading upwards (possibly not actually up) next season.

Bowen has been a revelation. He should be applauded as such. What a turnaround.

He’s brought in youth, ditched deadwood, dropped underperformers and binned off bad attitude, and look at those results.

But hey this is Reading FC with the most dickheaded fan base known to man. Well, least this forum.

It would never have happened, but, under Gomes,
his 11 games extrapolated to 46 games would have
seen us finish on 33 Points, rock bottom and relegated

Manager: GOMES

P11 W2 D2 L8 11-22 GD -11 8 PTS 22nd Gomes ACTUAL

46 8.34 8.34 33.45 46 92 -46 33.45 24th Gomes (Extrapolated to 46 Games)

P46 W8 D9 L33 F46 A92 GD -46 33 Pts 24th Gomes (46 Games ROUNDED)

By Contrast, under Bowen

P32 W13 D9 D9 43-31 GD12 55 Pts 5th Bowen (ACTUAL, 3 games to go)

46 18.69 12.94 12.94 61.81 44.56 17.25 69 Bowen (Extrapolated to 46 Games)

P46 W19 D13 L13 62-45 GD17 69 Points (46 Games ROUNDED)

Put these together to see:

P46 W08 D09 L33 46-92 GD -46 33 Pts 24th Gomes
P46 W19 D13 L13 62-45 GD +17 69 Pts 7/8th Bowen

I've been critical of him in a knee jerk reaction after some poor home performances but he's done alright on the whole. Home performances need to improve next season though. 7-8 wins out of 23 at home isn't good enough.

On the positive side he's kept us up and made us much harder to beat like Brian did when he first took over. In terms of points per game I think he's probably not far off what McDermott did when he got the job full time. Will be see the same success? Probably not. Has he been a good appointment? I'd say yes considering how poorly we started the season.

If he can maintain that away record and add 2-3 more home wins than we've had then we could easily make the playoffs. He just needs to encourage our team to go for it more at home. We try sitting on 1-0 leads too often.

Classic rule innit, build from the back.

11 clean sheets from 32 league games under Bowen. 31 conceded. Mostly well organised at the back and in midfield. That is excellent. Only 3 sides have conceded less than a goal a game from what I can see this season.

This summer, time to sort out the rather more chaotic and disjointed attack. 43 scored. And given we've achieved that excellent defensive record with some quite lightweight attacking midfielders (Swift, Ejaria, Olise) and people who can't run (Adam), we should be able to mostly keep that base.

Under Bowen we've conceded:
0 - 11 times
1 - 14 times
2 - 4 times
3 - 3 times

We've scored:
0 - 9 times
1 - 11 times
2 - 6 times
3 - 5 times
4 - 0 times
5 - 1 time

Just got to bump a few of those 0s into 1s and 1s into 2s and we're away. Especially at home. Scoring a first or second would have netted us an extra 13 points across 8 home games this season.

Good post and in fairness conceding one or less in 25 of his 32 games in charge is very impressive,

Difficult one.

The fact that, for a change we aren’t in a relegation battle and also should finish mid table I think indicates success to a point, for sure.

Bowen isn’t the sort of managerial appointment that many could get excited about but as has been said in a way steady was probably what we needed.

Can he kick on a progress next season? Who knows, I’m not hugely confident but it’s Worth giving him the chance based on this season 8 think.

If he can slim and tweek the squad over the summer and try to address a few things, home form obv is a key factor then who knows, let’s wait and see,

If you had told me after Gomes got sacked that, under the new manager, we would be mathematically able reach the playoffs with 3 games left then I would've bitten your hand off.

I'm fully behind him, he's steadied the ship after a horrendous few years, just need to rectify the home form and I think we can look at top half next year.
