Shall we just set up the phoenix club now?

I mean, it will save a lot of time and give us a head start for when RFC either goes into liquidation or is just passed around from one dodgey owner to the next.

Any thoughts on where we could play? Obviously somewhere nearer the town centre.

Would be good to have a decent community club that tries to encourage all the different groups in Reading to get involved. I've heard about similar clubs being set up in London that have had a lot of success. Would be nice to have ties to local communities, trade unions, activist groups rather than the Tories or corrupt governments.

Also could try and get some real craft food and drink involved. The craft ale scene in Reading is booming for one. Wouldn't it be great to be able to drink a few pints of interesting beer before a game rather than knocking back cheap lager in plastic cups. Good old boy is obviously a reasonable pint, but could do with some choice.

I was just texting the exact same thing to my lads. Amalgamate with Reading City, at least then we'd have a few players.

Stay a country mile away from that club. Their name already tells a story of incompetence. The dodginess and cluelessness there is obviously much smaller scale but at least as big a deal.

I would be surprised if a local club here could keep away from the dodgy characters. Some extremely successful people who are genuinely great coaches for the level and strong organisers are also not to be trusted any further than you can throw a fiver. I know some people who have put an awful lot of good work into sustainability, transparency, etc., only to be undermined by the chancers at every turn.

Best run local club is probably Eldon Celtic, strong personalities with their hearts in the right place. Close ties to the club but also ran by a Celtic supporter who would probably not want anything to do with Phoenix sides.

In all seriousness, how many people are going to watch a make-shift team deep in the bowels of the pyramid at the irredeemable craphole of Scours Lane?

With the exception of folded clubs (and FC United), has a single "fans' club" risen from their very modest start?

If Reading FC went to the wall, I'd 100% go to watch a Phoenix club.

They are Gravesend & Northfleet, renamed. The club wasn't formed by fans. It was bought out by a fan website with the club already in the conference, and other than the first year, was a failure.

A folded club, such as Aldershot, have it far easier, especially if they keep their ground (or have another half-decent ground to go to). The entire fan base effectively becomes fans of the reformed club. Keeping the ground is also very important. If Aldershot had been forced to groundshare at Cove or Camberley, I doubt they'd be anything other than a minor non-league club.

City of Liverpool FC are making a decent fist of it. Formed by supporters of Liverpool and Everton in 2015 fed up with the rising costs of going to football and currently playing in the NPL League 1 at Step 8 of the pyramid and have planning permission for a 3,000 seat stadium. They currently groumdshare with Bootle.

There's also AFC Liverpool who've been going since 2008, 2 steps below in the North West Counties League. They groundshare with Marine in Crosby.
