Second season syndrome

There's been a lot written about clubs having a good first season and then a poor second season after getting promoted.

I can see two reasons for this, firstly the unknown players take established teams by surprise in their first season, so by the second season their players and tactics are worked out.

Alternatively, players get aspirations to earn lots of money elsewhere and the core of the team goes, that coupled with a lot of new players to replace them unsettles the team and means the club doesn't fare as well.

Does it actually exist - people quote Ipswich, West Ham and Wigan as examples but ignore all the ones who do well / no worse) in their second season (Fulham ,Man City, Bolton

Of equal --or perhaps greater-- concern would be Deceased Comedian Syndrome.
