When Bikey Doesn't Play

by Snowball » 24 Feb 2009 18:56

I was asked to look up the stats for Reading games with/without Bikey

I'm doing requests now :D

Make of the stats what you will

P18 W9 D5 L4 25-16 = 32 Points = 1.77 Points per Game Scoring 1.4 Conceding 0.89 WITHOUT BIKEY
P14 W8 D4 L2 33-11 = 28 Points = 2.00 Points per Game Scoring 2.4 Conceding 0.79 WITH BIKEY

W 6-0 WEDNESDAY
W 4-1 Bristol
W 3-1 BURNLEY
W 3-0 Wolves
W 3-0 DERBY
W 2-1 DONCASTER
W 2-0 Sheff Utd

D 2-2 Watford
D 2-2 Cardiff (Bikey sent off after 30 Minutes)
D 1-1 SAINTS
D 0-0 QPR

L 1-2 Preston (unlucky defeat?)
L 0-1 Burnley (unlucky defeat?)

It is a nonsense that our best defender(and by that I mean his all round game) is being wasted in the reserves. He should be first choice in central defence not third.
Doubtless he will be at best on the bench on Saturday. Well miffed.

Thats actually quite interesting. I agree that the two away games could of been unlucky. I was suprised that when Bikey returned from the ban that he wasn't straight back in because he seemed a very important part of the team. Would love to see him back on saturday.

I also found it a little surprising that BK wasn't slotted back in because he was removed due to a red card that SSC seemed to be in great disagreement with. To lose one's spot because of injury is one thing, but to lose it to a poorly played red card is another.

By the way, Alex, that's "could have" or "could've," not "could of." Just trying to cut off the writers brigade.

100% agree , he's genuine class and remember those collosus performances earlier in the season and the goals from set pieces , he must play saturday , imho , along side young Pearce . Doobs been poor recent games including woeful defending for Brisol Citys first goal saturday

I wonder if his dynamism allows one or both midfielders to play further up?

It seems that without Bikey in both Cisse and Harps drop deeper and deeper, so sure we let in few goals but we look lees likely to score.

TBF, though a 6-0 and a 4-0 certainly swing the stats, and since then clubs have played more defensively against us

Wholeheartedly agree with this. We got fortunate that Duberry covered so well. But that's really all he is, cover. Bikey back in asap.

I think its more likely that we actually keep the ball a little more when Bikey plays because he doesnt just lump it down the line every time he gets it

Not quite sure how much I think that effects us, as although thats the way it seems I seem to remember us doing a lot of the same even with Bikey in the side

I'm sure he was playing at CB when we lost 2-1 at home to Saints....?

Doobs and Ingie TBH.

The last time he played for us was at the FAC Cardiff game and he picked up a yellow.

teams Reading: Hahnemann, Rosenior, BIKEY, Ingimarsson, Armstrong, Kebe, Harper (Gunnarsson 83), Cisse (Matejovsky 55), Stephen Hunt, Doyle, Noel Hunt (Long 61). Subs Not Used: Henry, Andersen.

I have appalled myself with my own pedantry, for which I apologise. For what it's worth, I like Bikey, I like his flamboyance and threat from set pieces. But to be fair to Duberry and Pearce, they have been great together, up until saturday, so I'm not surprised Bikey wasn't finding a way back in.

This is the only issue with Bikey - he's a class player when he chooses, professional (playing and scoring twice when his mother in law died) but it's always his temperment that is a concern. He's a controlled and settled player who's confident in possession, can play out of danger and make the telling pass when needed. I wish he was back but this disciplinary record is a concern that both he and Coppell need to work on.

Looks like there's basically nothing in it from those stats. Certainly nothing even close to conclusive.

It's not like conceeding has really been our problem until a couple of silly goals against Bristol. I'd have him in ahead of Pearce, but equally, Bikey makes mistakes as well and the more Pearce plays now the better he is likely to get.

Problem area is pretty much the way we function with the ball in attack. Doyle, Kebe and Hunt have been sussed and marked out of it, the rest aren't capable of creating something out of nothing. Or if they are, aren't playing in a role/way which allows them to.

having watched both defeats, neither struck me as inherently unlucky,

we failed to take our chances
the opposition made the most of theirs
