Rawlie19 I thought it was Pants Day that turned things around for us? Can we do that again to help stop us skidding down the pan?

Took us anoither 5 weeks to win after that! That was the turning point for playing a bit better at home.

If Pants Day stopped us being pants, can we organise Knickers Day to help us nick a win?

... I'll get my coat.

Alan Partridge More with 1997-8

Quarter FInals of a domestic cup competition

and Relegated from Div 1.

Except we were looking fairly comfortable at Christmas and then fell apart iirc.

We've been in the mire from day one on this one, which makes it more like the original post.

Thor for Butler, Khiz for Robinson (please!!!!).

Alan Partridge Quarter finals of Domestic Cup - Relegation

Possible Quarter FInals of Domestic Cup - Relegation?

No Parallel?

what quarter final did we make?

Sheffield beat us in the 5th round of the FA Cup. Wouldn't have been in any other competitions other than the league cup and leage.

Pants Day : 18th Dec 1999
Brendan Rodgers Sacked Day : 20th Dec 2009

Is that the parallel you're looking for?

Only one Trevor Morley well on this occasion Madjeski did spend big

And there you go.....you've answered your own point there, in 99/00 we bought our way out of trouble and in 09/10 this won't be happening. And neither will the safe, midtable finish we all craved all season long.

January 6th 1998 (so that'll be slap bang in the middle of the 1997/98 season for the two simpletons):

League Cup Quarter Final: Reading 0 - 1 Middlesbrough

I think the tone of the original post suggests that I agree and that we wont becuase that is the one difference despite the similiarities of the two seasons up to now

Only one Trevor Morley Well we may well have been here before...

A season that is often forgotten is our epic 1999/2000 which saw plenty of fans thinking that we were heading for the lowest tier. After a decision to ditch the attacking but ineffective football of a manager in the autumn who talked more than he delivered an unknown figure was put in charge from the back room - in this case Pardew

All did not start well and come the end of January after 25 games we had 23 points... ring any bells? fans called for the head of a manager who was yet to win a game (although cup progess was being made in LDV trophy!)

However a run of home games and some easier opposition saw reading win 4 of the next 5 and 12 wins in total saw us amazingly finish in the top half of the table.

Was there a catalyst - well on this occasion Madjeski did spend big and forked out 800k on Martin Butler - hard to believe we spent that on a striker when 3rd from bottom in League 1...

and how is this years Martin Butler - ladies and gentleman I give you Khizanavilli.....

Also, I'd like to add, that season, the first home game I went to was the turning point of the season, home to Colchester United, we won 2-0 (if my memory is re-calling everything correctly) this year my first home game of the season is this Saturday, against Barnsley. Will history repeat itself?

Only one Trevor Morley Was there a catalyst
A spirited 3-3 home draw with Stoke was the catalyst, The players were determined each time we were behind and that lead to the crowd getting behind them and that in turn fed the players. The players and fans carried that enthusiasm though into subsequent matches.

To an extent the Liverpool results should have helped inspire the team,

It's had to believe he wanted to join us in that position

I recall the referee 's day job was as a butcher in Bootle. It showed. Utter dejection walking home along the Oxford Road with wife and 2 young sons, with van loads of Boro fans giving it large on their way back north. Only really came to terms with that day when we played our first match in the Prem.

^^^ this a million times. Sad times. This was our Liverpool at home 3-1 moment ie: after that it all went Pete Tong. Relegation from Div 1 to 2 and the wilderness years. Relegation from the Premiership, soon to be Championship and more widlerness years.

Your fogetting our history here guys. There is no way that Allen would ever come back to the club while Sir John is still at the helm. Has everyone forgotten the foul mouthed rant that Allen made in front of Madjeski upon learning that he was being dismissed!?

Get a oxf*rd grip. This season is EXACTLY like 87/88 and 97/98: good cup runs followed by the inevitable relegation.

no its not there is no 8 in the year, therefore we are going to win 16 out the last 20 and hold our heads in anguish, as we miss yet another penalty that would have given us a shot at the play offs on the last day of the season.
