38 Years ago today

by Terminal Boardom » 05 Feb 2010 10:37

We lost 2-1 at home to Arsenal in the 4th round of the FA Cup. We scored all three goals. 25,000 plus shoe horned into Elm Park for a game that was the main feature on the following day's The Big Match on ITV. I didn't go the the game. I went to a shitty family wedding in Dagenham

I remember recording the game on my tape recorder.

It was on the "Big Match" the following day.

Morgan (o.g.)

Pat Rice long range shot was deflected in (o.g.)

Best goal by Barry Wagstaff ( excellent chip )

Also mentioned in "Fever Pitch" - Nick Hornby queuing to get tickets and his experience of the match.

I was there. It was a great day out, fantastic crowd and lots of noise. My dad got me the ticket off a friend where he worked. I remember being so despondent when we lost, at the time it felt as though we were by far the better side. On the tv the following day it seemed a bit more even, but that was just highlights. Happy days.

I had a photo of the Wagstaff goal on my wall for ages after that. Was the biggest crowd I have been in at Elm Park.

Yes me to and as far as I can remember EP was filled to capacity (it was a very tight squeeze on the South Bank) which I think was 25,000 at the time - reduced dramtically after a certain stadium disaster.

Capacity was 27,200. Reduced to 6,000 after the Braford fire in 1985. Increased eventually to 20,000. At the time of the Wolves game in 1985/86 the capacity was 13,000. Unofficial figures for that one were in the region of 19,000 plus. The Town End was full of Reading apart from a tiny pocket of 50 Wolves fans surrounded by the police in the Main Stand corner.

I seem to remember a rainy night at home to Luton was pretty full too.

Didn't we get 27,500 for a Leageu cup replay v Saints in about 78 or 79?

Now that was jam packed on the South Bank.

That was around the 24,000 mark. We drew 0-0 and Terry Gennoe had a blinder in goal for them. We lost the replay 2-0 at The Dell.

Didn't go to Arsenal game (parents said I was too young!) but the Saints game we were really unlucky. Two saves Gennoe made from Bowman & Hicks were top drawer. Was behind Tilehurst End and it was jam packed as well - remember getting there at 5.30 to get place right behind goal!
