Best result of the season?

by PEARCEY » 19 Mar 2011 22:30

Look at all the players we had out today. As at Ipswich we have won away with a hugely patched up team.
It may not have the cache or glamour of winning at Everton but this is a huge result today and for me our best result of the season.

Well done McD and the team....and for the doubters we are now definite play-off contenders.

Third league win on the bounce, only one winger when wingers are crucial to our game, out of form aging centreback, an old midfielder at right back, a kid in goal and two munchkins in midfield.

It's up there as a very important win.

For me it shows that McD has not got a 1st eleven of stars, and that the back up are as good, excellent way to run a football club IMHO, similar to Coppell.

With injuries, a difficult away win and pretty much every result going our way, yeah this is right up there as one of the best and most important results of the season thus far.

Long way to go yet tho.

I'm not sure it's the best result of the season but grinding out an away win with much of our first choice 11 back home on the treatment table makes it highly significant.

Winning is a habit and winning todays game with a patched up team and players on the bench some of us have never seen means we are more than capable of winning every one of our remaining fixtures.

Therefore, as things stand everything bar catching QPR is possible and I have no doubt McD will be seeing things in that way as the team bus returns from the Labour heartlands. (Sorry Parky and Dickie :P)

This could prove a pivotal moment in our season. All the results went our way and with a good goal difference and a game in hand we could find ourselves in the playoff places very soon.

Question is, whether we will push on and seize the opportunity, or bottle it as usual?

I didn't fancy us today I must admit. Superb result. But we're so in form right now, that bubble could pop at any time and we don't have time to recover if it does. Really need a run undefeated until the end of the season now.

I was worried we might crash down to earth with a bang. Bit of a patched up team but a great 3 points. And a couple of weeks to get our injured players back for the final push.

Just hope the rest doesn't break our momentum.

I have to admit when I saw the squad warming up with Howard and Ingimasson but no Legs or Hunt I thought we were going to struggle. Although the first half was a non-event they upped their game in the second and were worthy winners.

This was a key result, as our destiny is back in our own hands. Beat Leeds, Leicester and Forest and win the game in hand and we can make it into the play-offs.

I'm concerned we may get complacent and over-confident. Still expect us to fall just short, but we're giving it a good go, as usual.

We won't win every game playing turgidly though. You can manage it in the odd game. But not consistently.

I'd have thought the Pompey boys must be lauding today's result as their best of the season. A patched up team winning at Svenny City to keep them on our shirt tails. Roll on 2 April and let's make sure they're not talking about that result being their best so far. Need to keep Nugent and his gingah mate quiet.

Mind you, the bit that always cracks me up is matey boy with the bell (the tattooed antiques dealer) who's not allowed to take it in for health and safety reasons. 'The Pompey chimeless'.

"Injuries cost us" - Barnsley Manager

by rhroyal » 20 Mar 2011 17:31

Is pot and kettle the appropriate term? I think not, but I'm struggling to think of a closer one.

Great effort from our squad down to bare bones yesterday, again. Hopefully we'll be close to full strength by the time Pompey come round. If we do make the play-offs, we could well look at the last 2 away wins against Ipswich and Barnsley with a threadbare squad as the 2 games that did it.

Listening to Mark Robbins's dismal waffle about his injury crisis made me appreciate even more the way Brian McDermott speaks. He'd be entitled to lament our atrocious run of injuries, but instead he avers belief in his squad. This must inspire the likes of Howard, Gunnarsson, and Khizanishvili, assured he has faith in them to carry out the plan. Furthermore, the fact that reserves come in and do such a good job says much for McDermott's foresight--for example in keeping Bryn on for another season, which was questioned here. Part of a manager's job is to maintain a squad for all seasons; if Robbins can't do that, it's his problem. When Rodgers was here, he failed to give himself options in all positions, a mistake McDermott rectified as soon as he took over.

Quite hilarious Robins blaming injuries.

I reckon that if everyone is fit that our first choice 11 would be Feds, Griffin, Mills, Pearce, Harte, Legs, Karacan, McAnuff, Kebe, Hunt and Long - of those no less than 7 were out injured. On this basis I would say it was our best result of the season so far.

I can never remember such a decimated first team in all my years of following RFC and yet the replacements did us proud. The problem for some of the injured players will be getting their places back now!

Surely how much injuries are a problem depends on the relative depth of the squads? I'd be very surprised if our wage bill wasn't a hell of a lot higher than Barnsley's.
