lol even the leeds fans know we'll be selling as soon as Madejski can get a fee, they aren't convinced he's going to them by any means but its common knowledge reading are one of the biggest selling clubs in modern day football. If a strong offer comes in he'll be off, you're kidding yourself if you think otherwise.

Firstly I believe McDermott when he says he doesn't want to sell McCarthy to Leeds but we have let the genie out of the bottle by letting him go there on loan. In particular we may well have created a situation where the player himself wants to make his move permanent. I would think that unless he can be given assurances that a first team place at Reading will be his next season McCarthy will be looking to move away either in January or in the summer.

Our Chairman of course would be very interested in selling the player at any time to anyone who might make a substantial bid but I would hope that McDermott and Hammond would be able to persuade him that the level of bid that I suspect Leeds will be able to make is below his market value and also somehow keep the player himself happy in the medium term. Even if he breaks into our first team he will get his move at some point in the not too distant future anyway.

Just to weigh in with my Leeds perspective again, there is absolutely no danger of us signing McCarthy permanantly, he isn't a priority and we haven't paid over £500k on one player in nearly 7 years. The only worry is if a Premiership club decides if his obvious potential would be worth the money it would take. I can understand the arguments over Federici or McCarthy and I don't think there's an obvious right answer, personally think it would be impossible for you to keep them both for much longer and you have to decide whether you want the keeper who's slightly better now or the one who will be even better given a few years and he ain't too bad as it is now. Hope he hasn't been spilling any info on our team today.

I like the first one. Why on earth would we let an England U21 'keeper contracted until 2013 move on a free!? That goes completely without saying even if McDermott had said we're looking to shift him as soon as possible.

McDermott may as well have just laughed at the question, which says to me if he's being sold it's going to take significantly more than Leeds can afford.

BTW chaps, Madejski has bugger all to do with selling players and Hammond is renowned for being an absolute bitch when it comes to it. So if we say we aren't selling, we aren't selling.

Just look at the comments about Long, Shorey, Hunt, Doyle etc etc. When have we just straight out said we aren't selling? It doesn't happen. We say we're looking to keep them but every player has their price.

McCarthy will still be our player come February.

"I hope "We won't be selling" means the same in Berkshire as it does in West Yorkshire?"

It probably does, but that also gives the lie to the claim that "Reading are one of the biggest selling clubs in modern day football". We're no more nor less a selling club than pretty much anyone else in the Championship. It's life at this level.

I am afraid we are, we've sold 40million worth of players since we were relegated and I don't think our nearest rival in the entire football league is even at 20 million.

The perils of being so good at identifying and developing such good young players.

BTW, since they were relegated Palace sold over £20M of players, but as they were in administrtion they had to let many of them go for bargain prices, rather than decide when to sell.

I would welcome a list to show where you got that number from. Are you quoting the prices oft exaggerated in the press?

Good point, WSM.

According to Soccerbase, Reading';s transfers out have been :

2008/09 £5.5M
2009/10 £7.1M
2010/11 £6.0M
2011/12 £6.5M
TOTAL £25.1M

And lets not forget, without selling Kitson & Doyle we;d never have been able to develop Long, and ditto with Sonko to Matt Mills. It's a progression rather than a sales fest.

Still never let actual figures get in the way, eh!

Those figures are miles out though Dirk.

Take 09/10 as an example. The £7.1m your quoting doesn't take into account the fees received for Hunt, Bikey, Cisse or Harper (the latter possibly being a free).

Those inflated fees we hear about in the media are also inflated for our peers too remember so it's a reasonable like for like comparison. Soccerbase is a bit of an odd source for fees as they seem to make the odd one up but for teams like us who keep figures pretty secret it's almost useless.

How many years head start have Palace had on us since relegation by the way?

So, are we accusing the club of fiddling the accounts?

Look at the figures on Soccerbase and use your own judgment about how accurate they are. Fiddling is not the issue.

Only on HNA does questioning the transfer figures on on soccerbase = accusing the club of fiddling the accounts.

McCarthy was on the bench for Leeds against Derby. Seems Andy Lonergan is their first choice. Bit of a shame...
