Next capatin -Light hearted

by moonwalklikebas » 04 Sep 2012 15:26

Nice light hearted post for a change.

Who would you like to be the next club captain.

These four all strike me as being able to lead the side.

Not taking into consideration ageing players like Ledge, Gorkss, Harte etc

Be good to see who the fans want next.

Pearce.

He's the only one guaranteed a starting place.

Out of these 4, I reckon Guthrie could do a job.
However - I reckon Gorkss deserves a chance... he's practically Pearce's coach.

Leigertwood, surely?
I'm gonna have to vote Pearce.

Those two being after Jobi McAnuff, of course.

Guthrie on the basis he's the best player and if he's captain it means we've kept him and stayed up at least one, probably two seasons as McAnuff's going nowhere right now.

Otherwise Pearce.

Pearce is the most logical option of those. As above, the others aren't guarenteed a long-standing spot at the moment.

Typical thread started by a newbie, jumping the gun. Let's just wait and see how things pan out.

I don't understand how Guthrie isn't guaranteed a long standing spot. He's been clearly one of our best players. And we have no one else like him in the squad either.

+1

Any poll regarding future captains that doesn't include Gorkss is stupid rather than light hearted.

Pearce was half the player he is now before Gorkks arrived but, surprise, surprise! This is lost on the usual suspects.

By the time Jobi steps down or moves on Gorkss will be 32, 33.

A captain should be someone who bleeds the colour of the club, has been with the club since a early age. Pearce will be 24,25 and thats the perfect age for a player to step up and lead a team!

So you don't think the fact he's just getting older and more exposure to first team football is also as much a contributing factor? Pearce had a great little spell playing alongside Mills before he picked up an injury and Khiz came in. No doubt playing alongside Gorkss has helped him but so would playing with anyone with a decent level of experience.

He's still only 23 and to be regularly playing in a top Championship side/PL side is no mean feat. He'll be a great captain one day and if he signs a new contract I'd bet on him playing alongside Mariappa this time next year.

Taking into account age I'd change it to Pearce over Gorkss - if we're talking about 2 years into the future..

Guthrie - Simply because he is a very mature young man, and very creative player. I'd like to see him given the armband as I think he'd be vocal and help encourage more movement within the team for him to slip the ball through.

Pearce is an obvious choice. Strong at the back. A local lad.

I still don't favour McAnuff as a captain though. Yes we've done well with him in that role, but when you watch him he isn't the most vocal of players. If you watch Pearce and Gorkss a bit closer, you'll see they natural lead and direct. I think it's currently more a team effort than one particular captain.
