Looks as though Noel's coming into his own now. What a result that was

Be interesting to see how he does when he doesn’t have the paper thin squad and the world’s against us attitude to play on.

If this takeover ever happens and we can actually build a decent squad, everyone at the club will have to get used to dealing with expectations and pressure. We haven't expected much as a fan base for at least 3 years or so.

Yeah, you've only got to look at people writing Hunt off after three games, and 9 games ago saying they can't see where another point is coming from to see how mad expectation will be and how little patience they'll have. And this is with all the current shit going on.

Not quite sure where to put this, but - interesting article in the Irish Independent yesterday about Irish managers in English football, with Noel Hunt front and centre. Reading's plight also known about across the Irish Sea

Someone just posted in the takeover chat that we might have been better positioned if Couhig had come in and we kept Smith and Selles.

I'm beginning to draw the conclusion that under Hunt, Reading are much tougher to beat, and this has built the momentum that took repeated hits every time Reading got thumped under Selles. If you go 6 7 games unbeaten that builds a sort of momentum that we never achieved under Selles. It's also possible that with such a young side its just getting better as it gets older and more experienced and this would have happened under Selles too so who knows.

But yeh, I could definitely been convinced that Selles leaving has improved us. Albeit this style of football get almost nothing in the Championship if we were to go up.

I think under any owner a £2m offer for a striker gets accepted anyway.

just a quick count

Selles - P17 W9 D3 L5 F29 A24
Hunt - P24 W10 D8 L6 F30 A27

Slighly more robust, slightly less likely to win, draws instead of losses but I don't think much in it. Defence essentially 1 goal better over evert 4 games.

But Selles had a reliable 20 goal a season L1 striker up front.

Smith has never been that prolific has he? I'd say 15 a season not 20.

Noel has definitely taken it a stage further in my view as its not just Smith, he's had no Elliott and significant defensive injuries in the last few weeks.

You cannot however underestimate what Ruben did last season; he took a major gamble playing untested academy players over experienced pros like Carroll, the Toms etc. Always think that Millwall cup game was the start of a new era.

Not really much of a gamble when all you have is a Hobson’s Choice.

Noel has done an excellent job tbh. Can’t really fault him tbh. He may get found out under a new owner if and when that happens but he should always be remembered for doing a cracking job in extremely difficult circumstances this season

Just on the bare stats, that 1.76 points per game vs 1.58, or 81 points over a season vs 73, which could be the difference between qualifying for the playoffs and not. Obviously, all of the contextual stuff people added above is also valid. (But don't forget whilst Hunt lost Smith, Selles lost Azeez at quite a late stage in the preparation for the season, and his contribution last year wasn't nothing.)

The contextual stuff just ends up bogged down in "yeah but". All managers have to deal with something.

Selles could have been an RFC great. We'll now never know.
Hunt is on track to being a legend.
