Important to get the first win but damn that was one of the worst games I've ever seen. Watched better quality games at Maidenhead and Woking than today.

Snowflake Royal Great performance, hanging on a bit at the end, but first win, first clean sheet.

Great press, great energy and pace. Lots of chances. Just need to start converting a few more.

Awful game of football! Players scoring worldies is not sustainable. Very poor tactics from Noel again. #readingfc

that was far from comfortable

Made hard work of that one, but home win, 3 points and a clean sheet! Something to build on! Well done lads! Up the Ding!

An important win. But let’s not allow this to paper over the cracks. This team is not being managed well and with the players we have, we should be considerably better. I’m still in the Noel Hunt out camp

Awful football and some poor individual performances but first win of the season to hopefully build on from here. Clean sheet is a bonus.

Awful performance but a bit of class saved us there! Massive improvements needed!

Not convincing at all but will take the win all day long. Great finish from Lane for the winner

Surely that has not bought Hunt time? Awful performance.

Even the The tilehurst end

‘Seen much worse, but that was overall an unconvincing, disjointed #ReadingFC performance’

James earnshaw

FT 1-0. It wasn't pretty but #readingfc have their first win of the season!

Literally everyone is saying it was awful.

But Ian, Ian thought that was a great performance :|

Not a great second half of football. Seemed to keep our shape well for defending, but Burns was a point of weakness. Great goal from Lane - I like the look of him. Shame Marriott was debuted at the moment we decided to entirely give up on the attack - never keen on seeing us park the bus to protect a one goal lead, just seems to put us under more pressure. Far too many changes imo, just got messy.

The midfield still isn’t quite working for me, but we got the win we needed. Not bad, not great, but welcome result.

Also, wind it in Brogue. You made your point.

Nah Ian’s a Cnut and I like to make him look like it. He’s had two pops at me today about me saying it was a shit performance, so I will continue to make him look like the stupid Cnut that he is.

Hey Ian what amount these

A moment of individual quality won us that game, will take the win but the performance was not good. Still don’t have a clue what we are trying to do.

Two ways to look at that:

A) performance doesn’t matter, result the most important thing, on to the next one
B) how on earth have we won that? yet another performance without any signs of tactical progress

I’m somewhere in between the two.

Not convincing at all that win today, but you will take in the circumstances given #readingfc poor start to the season.

Not the best we’ve played but I’ll take it! 2nd ball needs work #readingfc like marriot already

Hunt still has to go. Miles out of his depth and these flukey wins just delay the inevitable. Much rather get someone in now so they have longer to work with and improve the squad
#readingfc

Awful game of football! Players scoring worldies is not sustainable. Very poor tactics from Noel again.

Quality finish by Paddy Lane and about the only bit of quality the whole game.

Yeah great performance today

And i’’m Apparently shit at post match analysis.

Happy with the win, but god what a totally disjointed performance against Port bloody Vale, the only thing to enjoying was that class finish. a better side would have buried us today.

A very scrappy match low on quality from both teams. The Lane goal and the save low to his right by Pereira were the only bits of true quality in the game.

Pereira - Great save. Otherwise not much else to do. Kicked a couple needlessly into touch and put Ahmed into trouble with another he should've kicked long. 7

Ahmed - Great pass down the line to win an early corner. Excellent run and attempted cross that should have probably been converted. Needs to be a bit more wary of what is over his shoulder when crosses come in. Otherwise defended well and a couple of decent runs. 7 motm

Burns - He just makes these silly little mistakes. Got away with it today. 5

Williams - Solid if unspectacular again. Good signing 6

Jacob - He is so so bad. Constant misplaced passes, bad runs, wandering around like a competition winner. One good recovery tackle which he only had to make because he'd lost the ball. 4

Lane - Great finish which he did well to rescue as it was a pretty bad cross. A few other positive moments as well. Promising 7

Elliott - one to forget from the moment he slipped up and let them counter us from the early corner. Nothing went right for him. 4

Wing - Solid, but nothing really stood out. Just went about his business without a fuss. 6

Savage - A bit more like the Savage of old. Still not quite there, but hopefully back to his best after the international break. 6

Kyerewaa - When or if he develops a consistent final ball then he will be a real danger. Right now it's just promising runs with a disappointing conclusion apart from his hopeful ball in today that Lane managed to rescue spectacularly. 6

O'Mahoney - Just looks lost out there. He's trying, but it just isn't obvious how it's going to come off for him. 4

Subs:
Dorsett - Great goal saving block. 6
Marriott - promising but let the ball run across him once or twice and had the ball nicked from him putting is in trouble. 6
Fraser - Once again looked lost out of position. 5
Doyle - Had one good run, but failed pulled the trigger. Did better than Elliott. 5
Camara - one of his better performances. Almost scored on the back post but just got there a bit late. 6

Agree with everyone else on it being a very drab match and another poor performance. Got away with it too, with the Port Vale player putting over the bar towards the end of the game.

Good to get that first win though. Hopefully we'll improve as the players start to understand each other and the likes of Ehibhatiomhan, Ritchie and O'Connor come into the team.

Pretty poor performance today, superb goal aside

Definitely made hard work of it and PV could easily have nicked 1 or 2 themselves

Elliott was utterly inept. Not sure what that was about. Jacob isn’t good. Ahmed was good but needed to be subbed 15 mins earlier than he was

Kyewerra’s going to divide opinion: thought he was pretty poor myself. He’s exciting but the end product is terrible and not sure that will improve. Would rather Ritchie or Garcia there

Lane decent. MoM had moments but wtf is he always so deep? That’s a Hunt thing not his choice. He looked far better than Marriott imo who I’m still far from convinced is the right signing.

Except Doyle for Elliott all our subs seemed to make us gradually worse again

All a bit scratchy but a good 3 points.

Poor first half but improved in the second half and just about deserved the three points, though Vale offered very little going forward.

I think we have to be a bit patient as the team are still working each other out - players today were not reading each other’s passes but that will come with time; hopefully we can work on tactics over the intl break.

Marriott looked lively when he came on and will be a much better attacking focal point than the luckless MoM. PLane clearly has quality and that was an excellent finish, though not sure who in the crowd he was shushing?

Well I enjoyed it. High energy, direct. Running at them, created chances. Solid defending to see it out.

If you can't enjoy that after 5 games without a win, I don’t see the point in watching.

Can anyone explain why (other than the referee was a tit) the injured PV player who received extensive treatment on the pitch didn't have to leave the pitch?

I couldn't believe that either......Some of the refereeing hit a new low today. It was awful. Blatent pushes not given, and one where a PV player went through the back of a Reading player and nothing given, and some of the cards were ridiculous....

The commentary explained that because he was injured by a foul, and (Jacob?) was booked doing it, the player didn’t have to leave the pitch.

Well thought out response, he was dogshit, giving the ball away numerous times in 2nd half before he deservedly got hooked.
