MATCHWATCH : Stockport County (a)

by Sutekh » 24 Sep 2025 12:54

When : Saturday September 27 2025, 3pm
Where : Edgeley Park, Hardcastle Road, Stockport, SK3 9DD
Capacity : 10,852

After last night’s expected largely pointless shambles in the league cup comes the chance to do the same again in the league at a ground that is not well known for hospitality towards teams from Berkshire.

Stockport are 8th and have won 4 of their 9 league games so far. While they are on a run of just 1 win in 7, this game still has an air of inevitability about it after the way Reading were twice battered by the Cheshire outfit last season.

And there has been little change to their squad over the summer, Oliver Norwood is still pulling the strings and Kyle “goal every other game” Wootton is still doing his stuff, the only real change was the £900k  capture of Mark Mothersille from Peterborough.

Referee

Oliver Mackey

Historically

Reading have visited Stockport on 17 occasions and won just twice compared to 7 wins for Stockport. Edgeley Park is a fairly miserable place for Reading usually though as the club have not won there since August 1971 (13 meetings ago) and have conceded 9 on the last 2 visits.

There is some inconsistency with Stockport but just have a bad feeling about this one. Would take a draw.

Stockport buying players for £900,000. And we are getting free transfers from Crawley. Depressing

Hard to see anything but a resounding defeat here. Stockport beat us last year whilst barely breaking a canter and we rarely seem to do well if we travel further away than any London club. Its a badly timed game, because i feel like Hunt might be on the verge of turning things around our fragile start to the season and a defeat now could derail that.

My only prediction is that some of our traveling support should take their tenor lady with them.

They also will i fear need to take suitable rainwear as the forecast i have seen indicates it could be a wet afternoon on the roofless stand.

I think the stand was guaranteed to get wet regardless of weather

Last three results against Stockport:

1-5 (1998)
1-4
1-3

So if that pattern continues we'll only lose 2-1 right? Then on for a 1-1 draw in the reverse fixture.

Probably lose it but we do at least look capable of scoring a few atm.

They really did batter us twice last year though - was men against boys in both games

Do we? Think we still look pretty toothless and powderpuff, especially away from home

I don’t think we look great by any means but we’ve been scoring goals - 2 against Orient, Barnsley, Wimbledon, Wycombe…

Well we've scored six league games running and in 8 of the last 9 games across all competitions, so yes. We absolutely do.

That 1-5 game in 1998 was just an utterly miserable night; not only was the football dire, but it absolutely lashed down before, during and after the game......hated every second of the experience.

Was fancying a draw until i read our injury report! If both Dorsett and Williams are out plus Garcia then i really don't fancy our chances against a robust Stockport team. Guess it will be Ahmed, Burns, Stickland and Jacob.
I guess we will just have to outscore them :D

Not fancying us at all, 3-1 defeat. It'd be typical us to go get a clean sheet with a makeshift defence now I've said that.

Indeed - the man who never leaves his arm chair is criticising our away support.

That’s the measure of the man.
