MATCHWATCH : Cardiff City (a)

by Sutekh » 14 Oct 2025 11:05

When : Saturday 18th October, 3pm
Where : Cardiff City Stadium, Leckwith Road, Cardiff, CF11 8AZ
Capacity : 33,280

After so many years of being Championship relegation fodder Cardiff finally succumbed last season but unlike Reading after their relegation Cardiff have adjusted favourably fairly quickly (being 3rd in the table with just 2 losses in the league so far) though much of that is down to keeping together a fairly decent squad for this level - amazing what only being a minor basket-case club means.

It's been 2 weeks since Cardiff last played (a 4-3 defeat of Orient at home) so they should be reasonably fresh and raring to go. They've been a little unsure of things at home so far with a mixed bag of results ranging from stuffing Plymouth 4-0 to being turned over 1-0 by Burton so I would presume they've learned to be patient and wary of opposition by now so Reading's management team will need to be on the ball, able to motivate and and show astuteness in this one.

The threats come in the shape of international Welsh attacking midfield brothers Joel & Ruben Colwill and forwards Yousef Salech and Callum Robinson (10 goals between them all).

Referee

Lee Swabey

Previously

15 Mar 25 > Reading 1-1 Stevenage
16 Sep 23 > Reading 1-0 Bolton Wanderers

Historically

It’s the 34th trip to Cardiff in the league and it's a reasonably level time of things so far with 10 wins for Reading against Cardiff's 14.

Recent seasons have seen Reading actually not doing too badly at all in this part of Wales with just 1 defeat in the last 6 trips in all competitions though you have to remember both clubs were at various levels of basketry during this time. The downer is that that 1 defeat was on the last visit back in February 2023.

How to follow the game

  1. Listen to Radio 5 Live and/or a myriad of other radio stations for score flashes
  2. SKY
  3. Ring/text a mate for updates
  4. Get a ticket and travel
  5. Use a RoyalsTV subscription
  6. BBC Radio Berkshire (FM : 104.4, 104.1 or 95.4 depending where you are in the area)

I think Cardiff will win fairly comfortably and then Noel will be shown the door

Not that I think Cardiff are especially good. Seems a poor division this year, can’t believe Wimbledon are 5th

anyway expect it’ll be

JP
Ahmed O Connor Burns Jacob
Wing Doyle Savage
Ritchie Marriott Lane

Stevens, Kyeweera, Ehibhatiomhan, Dorsett, Elliott, Yiadom, O Mahony

Or something very close to that.

I’d bin off Jacob and prob change lane for Kelvin E so we at least we have some sort of pace and physicality up top. I’d be tempted to change the midfield as well

Assuming Camara, Fraser, Williams are all still injured

Wimbledon are 5th? Does that mean people are wetting the bed less about them beating us?

Silly question. Sorry.

We've lost 1 league game in 8. So I'll go draw, and absolutely zero chance of Hunt losing his job before the next game, even with a 4-0 defeat.

Yeah, I'm feeling a draw as well, Cardiff started strongly but their form has dipped recently so it doesn't feel like a foregone conclusion.

But with pressure from other investors who knows. Personally, unless performances really do become alarming, then sit tight and review everything top to bottom just before the window re-opens.

I feel we are due a win as Cardiff would have gone down when we get relegated except for our points deduction. We're due some karma.

Having said that I expect we'll get thrashed 3-0

At many clubs, lose this one and Hunt goes. The table doesn't lie by October, and we have the resources to be doing much better.

Our current owners are probably a bit more forgiving than that. But patience will run out if there's not a significant improvement.

And I doubt very much that improvement will come against the Bluebirds. It's hard to anticipate anything other than a home win.

The table doesn't lie by October,

Couldn't find the exact match but here's an early October table from last season.
It's definitely not telling the whole truth at this stage.

17 - Rotherham (13)
18 - Bristol R (22)
19 - Northampton (19)
20 - Leyton Orient (6)
21 - Crawley (21)
22 - Burton (20)
23 - Shrewsbury (24)
24 - Cambridge (23)

The season before, we were bottom of the table in late October.

It's like the last four to five seasons just didn't happen.

It’s near spot on except Orient who everyone at the time said were outperforming their results. We’re not.

"The table doesn't lie" is a stock phrase used by pundits, managers etc.

It doesn't mean things can't change - like Orient managed last season, but that the sample size of games is big enough to give an accurate account of where that teams is now.

You might lose your first two games by being unlucky. If you're in the relegation zone by mid October you're not unlucky, your deserve to be where you are.

Would anyone argue we shouldn’t be bottom 4 or haven’t looked a bottom 4 side at this stage?

Anyway….chance we can pull a result at Cardiff but just can’t see it

Got tickets, against my better judgement.
Can anyone recommend any uplifting podcasts to listen to for about 90 minutes?

You're not a natural diplomat, are you?

Luton looks a bit of an overreaction, but then I don't know the full story.

Blackpool sit 23rd, 2 wins, 2 draws, 8 defeats. Obvious sacking.

Wycombe 19th. 3 wins, 3 draws, 6 defeats. Unless there's some amazing turn around on the pitch that's not quite translating into points the manager's got to be expecting it.

Armadillo Roadkill Luton looks a bit of an overreaction, but then I don't know the full story.

Luton have been in a bit of a downward spiral since getting to the Premier League and I agree that's probably an over-reaction as they have to readjust to the finances of League One (especially as it appears they're using their Premier League and parachute money to go towards longer term sustainably - stadium redevelopment; youth academy; I think new training facilities).

They were also massively punching above their weight by being anywhere near the Premier League in the first place.

It’s irrelevant if you or I think they’re idiots or whether you disagree with it - it’s just the way things are. I didn’t say I think he should get the boot but I think it will happen if we lose and play poorly again
