I've said many times, 10 goals for Reading, (and I listed each one) and "11 if you add in THIS SEASON's international."

I also EXPRESSLY STATED which games I was covering and EXPRESSLY STATED I was NOT including the game at Anfield which Long won for us by winning the penalty and then scoring the header from open play.


The point is, we are discussing LONG's FORM

Over 13 games his form has been EXCELLENT, but not his goal-scoring and the man has been selected whenever he's been fit.

Gwathoppa then posted a viciously-selected stat to make Long look awful, carefully omitting a very good scoring patch.

I included those games as they were the games Long played immediately before Gwathoppa's "25" and they paint a very different picture.

10 in 30, (Reading) or 11 in 31, (Reading plus an international) with 5 penalties won (Reading) and 4 assists (Reading) is very good work indeed

How Martis didn't get a yellow card is beyond me. He committed about 10 fouls, walked off with the ball when we had a free-kick and was shouting abuse at the linesman and the ref.

The ref displayed a great deal of weakness in dealing with him, which I hope his assessor has noted. At one point he was clearly calling him over to issue a public warning but Martis just turned away, mouthing off and gesturing in the general direction of the ref as he walked away. It took the ref a long time to get Martis to come back to him, which should have turned the warning into a yellow card. Indeed at the time we were commenting what a pratt Martis was for earning himself a booking when the ref had been going to let him off. It therefore was staggering to see the ref let him get away with such a blatent display of disrespect/dissent towards him.

Donny's number 4 was a treat of ineptitude all game, so glad he got himself in that position at the end

Agreed, I enjoyed his chaotic performance - but it rather sums up the game that he did actually score Donny's second . It was a good thing that they spaffed that very nice chance at the end because I fear I might have shouted my larynx clean out of my throat had they equalised for 4-4

He was so appalling, and so unlike the cultured footballers that tend to make up Doncaster's squad, that I questionned whether they had been short of players that day and picked him up at the motorway services on the way to the game!

I too was absolutely delighted that he called for the clear cut chance right at the death!

His previous 18 starts saw his score 8 goals, not nine. Of those 8 "open play" goals, one was a penalty and another was from a free kick.

Or are you counting goals scored as sub in his "goals from 31 starts" stat, as well as counting goals from free kicks as goals from open play?

Which one was the free-kick? I checked all his goals

Some of the stats are quite interesting and I didn't mind looking at them, but then it became meaningless spam and posting stats for the sake of posting stats without any relevance to anything.

Fair enough, but that is sort of half-and-half.

It's NOT a penalty (which is the Long-Knockers point)
It's not DIRECT from a free-kick, either.

Technically it's open play, though at what point a goal is not "from a free-kick or corner"... eg Karacan's shot, Church's deflection "from a corner" or Karacan's volleyed goal "from a corner"

I would think of both of those as "from a corner" but at the time of Longy's goal v Villa, I thought "open play."

Be fair, he was on fire that day.

I'm glad we won by coming back from being 3-1 down. I was beginning to think every time we conceded our confidence dropped to such an extent we'd never win a game if that happened. Donny might have been ahead of us during the game, but they always looked like a team we should have the measure of. Long had chance after chance in the first half and never managed to convert any of them into goals. I was frustrated that he didn't get subbed earlier but very pleased that it meant Church AND Hunt came on. I would like to see Church start more often whether he is used as a lone striker or as a pair. Why not try Long playing just behind Church?

I was curious about Church as a sub versus Church starting, so I looked at last season and this, all games

Church's Stats are

8 Goals from 32 Starts totaling 2,407 minutes on pitch = 1 goal every 300.88 minutes
7 Goals from 32 as sub totaling 0,467 minutes on pitch = 1 goal every 066.70 minutes


So, in a very similar way to Shane a couple of years ago, Simon does well as an impact sub 450% better than when starting

I thought Long played well. But he is palpably worrying about his lack of goals. When he was clean through you could see he looked up to pass, found no one there, and only then had a shot but the angle was worse and it went wide.

Maybe a rest would help, but I fear that we have no one else who can play that lone role as well (and what do you think we'll play at QPR? I'll be surprised if it's 4-4-2).

Anyway - 8 goals in 2 games is not somethign to complain about, and I do love late winners.

Sadly it is also 8 goals in 4 games which doesn't look anything like as good. That's the trouble with Stats - it depends how you use them. To be fair at least Snowball tries to use them fairly!!
