I'd agree with that but other teams appear to be doing something that we aren't because season after season they get away with being overly physical whereas we don't appear to get the same. Also not sure I'd praise a ref who took the best part of a minute to spot a player lying on the floor with a head injury in the first half.

Players go down all the time clutching their.heads to stop the game.
He spotted it. He was simply ignoring it.

Not saying he was perfect
Just that it was noticeably better than most refs last season. In that I didn't leave wanting to kill him

West Stand Flash Ipswich should have won 3-1
Akpan & Taylor are not Championship level players.
We were lucky.
A decent team would have won at ease.

Yeah. Bayern Munich would have wiped the floor with us. Luckily we were only playing a Championship match against opposition who finished last season strongly and are fancied to make the play off places with a patched up side.

But they did not.
Play Taylor in his proper position and give Akpan some support.
Sometimes you need luck.
Maybe but they did not.

And the match should be stopped straight away. Whether you you think it's serious or not.

It's a shame melonhead that you choose now to dismiss the subject of head injuries given how concussions have become such an issue in sport due to several instances of brain damage amongst other serious head injuries.

Then again I suppose when you've destroyed your own brain through recreational drug use you don't have to worry about things like concussion.

AbovetheI 3 points are 3 points. Great to start the season at home with a win. However....

Ipswich had 25 shots approx at goal. It's hard to tell whether or not our defence was shit enough to allow them that amount of shots, or whether their attacking prowess was just dump.

Midfield shape was non existent. Akpan was terrible. Gave the ball away countless times and his first touch was simply woeful.

Everything was too slow. Build up play, from Fedders upwards was just at a snails pace.

Michael Hector was brilliant in defence. For the first half he kept McGoldrick in his pocket. Midweek against Newport he was immense in midfield and it was fantastic to see him adapt to that role and play a similar game commanding central defence. Will be our player of the season for sure.

It was FANTASTIC to see the yoof get a game.

Suffice to say, a little bit more creativity and confidence, as well as some more direct, pacey attacking play and we'll be just fine this season.

More a case of midfield being overrun than defence in trouble really. They may have had about 25 shots, but all of about 3 looked threatening.

melonhead I'll add my praise for a decent pint in the concourse. And The service was quick for the first game of the season.

I'd also like to praise the ref, and the atmosphere.

I'd like to praise the ref and would if he hadn't missed so much of the rough stuff Ipswich were doing, Cox getting kneed in the back and him waving play on being a particular lowlight.

The ref was absolute pants in my view - the Ipswich defence were virtually rugby tackling Pog most of the time and he did nothing about it. We seem to get worse and worse refs each week.

I understand those saying it wasn't the most entertaining match but a really pleasing win nonetheless with clearly a depleted squad and a number of promising youngsters playing their part. In a sense it reminded me of much of the McDermott era with a performance of grit and character which is no bad thing.

In particular it reminded me of two recent home wins against Ipswich, especially one in September 2010 when SImon Church scored a late goal. Shaun Cummings was just starting to emerge at right back (with Andy Griffin out injured), Zurab Khizanishvili was suspended and Matt Mills got sent-off so we ended up with a then somewhat untrusted Alex Pearce and Ian Harte in central defence, Hal Robson-Kanu made what must have been one of his first starts under Brian McDermott, and Antonio came on as a substitute when he was just starting to come through. It wasn't the best performance but a great feeling to win the game. Another gritty win v Ipswich was a 4th successive win, on New Year's Eve 2011.

Across a season sometimes you have satisfying wins like that. It seems to me so far we've had a match we should have won with some good football against Wigan and then a match maybe we shouldn't really have won with a more gritty performance against Ipswich. I think you need both types for a successful team and I am reasonably optimistic about the season ahead, even if I think it unlikely we will be pushing for promotion (unless a few more signings are made before the transfer windows.)

I would say though that perhaps Taylor and Obita should swap positions. I'm not sure Obita is suited to central midfield and without him on the left our team lacks a bit of attacking balance.

I found it quite entertaining, but that's probably because it was my first game of the season. If that were back end of November, blowing a gale and -3 it'd probably be another story.

Royal Lady I thoroughly enjoyed that - the players really did seem to be up for it. Have to mention Federici's goal kicks though - almost every time he took one, he still had the ball in his hand when his feet were out of the area - the lino didn't notice because he'd run on ahead, but if he keeps doing it, it will get noticed at some point and could cost us.

I thought everyone had a pretty good game, I've always championed Simon Cox, and thought he did well - got into some good positions etc - surprised he was subbed tbh. For me, possibly the only weak link there yesterday was Jake Taylor - but he's young and the more this lot play together, the more they will gel. Looking forward to Tuesday now. When you consider the players we have out injured, then imagine would this squad will be like when they're all fit. #believe

I noticed the same as you Royal Lady, cos he has always done it; however tbf it doesnt matter where his feet are, but where the ball is

But the ball was still in his hands on a number of occasions.

+1 - never seemed to notice the players holding their arms around Pog, pulling his shirt, basically preventing him for a fair chance of getting a ball on many occasions.

And I think he clearly saw the head injury incident, but thought he'd just thrown himself to the floor and ignored it.

Yes indeed. But its still irrelevant where his feet are, it is relevant where the ball is, and if his hands (and therefore the ball) is inside the penalty area, it dont matter where his feet are.

Maybe I haven't made myself clear, but on a number of occasions, he was holding the ball OUTSIDE the box before kicking it.

'agreed, unlike the cheating Sammon who fell over at every opportunity and conned the ref into giving a free kick.

Noticed this too RL. But it's a hawk-eyed and gutsy lino that's going to call it.

Still, not sure why he's so happy to risk it all the time.
