I understand those saying it wasn't the most entertaining match but a really pleasing win nonetheless with clearly a depleted squad and a number of promising youngsters playing their part. In a sense it reminded me of much of the McDermott era with a performance of grit and character which is no bad thing.
In particular it reminded me of two recent home wins against Ipswich, especially one in September 2010 when SImon Church scored a late goal. Shaun Cummings was just starting to emerge at right back (with Andy Griffin out injured), Zurab Khizanishvili was suspended and Matt Mills got sent-off so we ended up with a then somewhat untrusted Alex Pearce and Ian Harte in central defence, Hal Robson-Kanu made what must have been one of his first starts under Brian McDermott, and Antonio came on as a substitute when he was just starting to come through. It wasn't the best performance but a great feeling to win the game. Another gritty win v Ipswich was a 4th successive win, on New Year's Eve 2011.
Across a season sometimes you have satisfying wins like that. It seems to me so far we've had a match we should have won with some good football against Wigan and then a match maybe we shouldn't really have won with a more gritty performance against Ipswich. I think you need both types for a successful team and I am reasonably optimistic about the season ahead, even if I think it unlikely we will be pushing for promotion (unless a few more signings are made before the transfer windows.)
I would say though that perhaps Taylor and Obita should swap positions. I'm not sure Obita is suited to central midfield and without him on the left our team lacks a bit of attacking balance.
