Confrimed by the Beeb:

"His Majesty's Revenue & Customs has lodged a winding-up petition against Wigan Athletic over unpaid tax bills, with a hearing date of 26 July.

It follows the English Football League placing the Latics under a transfer embargo last week for breaching league rules on tax payment.

Wigan will begin the League One season after relegation with an eight-point deduction for late payment of salaries.

It also understood money is outstanding from last month's salary payments.

The club has said it is in the process of being sold but one of the interested parties, 21-year-old businessman Sarbjot Johal, failed to gain EFL approval for his proposed purchase of Morecambe earlier this year.

Winding-up petitions can be resolved by payment of debt or by arrangement of a payment plan with the creditor, in this case HMRC itself."

As July 26th is a month after the fixtures have been released, this could pose a real headache for the EFL.

I think it is a shame what has gone on at Wigan.
The club has kind of been in tandem with us for some years with both clubs getting to the Premier League probably against the odds and Wigan even having won an FA Cup final-they even managed to get relegated that season just as we did in the season that we won the Simod Cup.

Fans of both clubs will be forever grateful to the respective owners, the Mad Man and Dave Whelan, for getting the clubs a small taste of the big time.
Since both owners rescinded their stakes in each club it has been a downward financial spiral with dodgy owners not having as deep pockets as imagined and some dreadful running of financial affairs.

We may not be in quite such dire straits (are we?) as Wigan but I have sympathy for their fans and hope that both clubs get on a sound financial footing sooner than later and of course that both stay in business and don't end up doing a Bury.

A winding up order brought because of monies owed to the HMRC was thrown out of court as Bury had managed to agree a CVA with creditors. Bury were therefore kicked out of the FL by the FL becuase they hadn't found a buyer for the club in the time they were given.

Presume the same might be about to happen to Wigan leaving a 23 team third division and 1 team missing a league fixture every week (let's hope Reading get midweek fixtures against Wigan just in case).

Agreed it sucks, I wouldn’t wish any club be in their, our, Derby's position

A lot of clubs in the Lancashire area all fighting for the similar positions and struggling to differentiate themselves. It's tough enough getting investment for a lot of the clubs in the lower half of the 92 without having several clubs sat on your doorstep.

No one stands out from their squad.

Their top scorer is in his 30s. We don't really want another defender used to failure.

Yeah it's a real shame for Wigan really, always thought they were a decent club.

A lot of clubs in the Lancashire area all fighting for the similar positions and struggling to differentiate themselves. It's tough enough getting investment for a lot of the clubs in the lower half of the 92 without having several clubs sat on your doorstep.

Though relegated, Rochdale are actually a really well run club and about the only league club up that way last season without some sort of financial issue. Their relegation is because they simply don't have the money to compete (now fully fan owned I think) now that the 4th tier is becoming full of "billy big-b*****" clubs like Salford etc. and they're just not willing to spend beyond those means. Really hope they get back to the league quickly.
