Brian McDemott “Now we work with the players we've got, that's what we always do. There's nothing we can do about players we haven't got, all we can do is thank Shane and go from there."

Think we should get an attacking midfielder who can change things up a bit from the bench if things aren't going well, coz we got Howard as attacking option but he rarely seems to make an impact. A center back with a bit of pace should be a priority, as well as some cover at left back. I got no problem with Harte, his lack of pace may cost us a goal every now and then but he can more than make up for that by chipping in with his fair share but Williams isn't sufficiant cover in that position. I think our starting 11 is strong enough, a bit more depth in the squad though and i think we can still challenge for play-offs this season.

Would like to see us sign Coppinger from Doncaster think he'd be good competition in midfield, could challenge for 1st team. Will chip in with a few goals. Proven at this level. Starting to get on a bit now (think he's like 30) so shouldn't break the bank to sign him i wouldn't have thought

So why does McDermott keep rambling on about a possible Manset/Church partnership being so good?

Because he thinks it would be? I tend to agree if we can feed it right.

Manager is always going to talk up what he's got, even if he's looking to add more.

possibly because he wants manset/church to believe in themselves, and that he believes in them, and doesnt really want to come out saying stuff like- id like to rely on simon and mathieu, but they just aint good enough.
because he wants to give them at least 1 game together in which to prove/disprove it before wasting money on a striker we didnt actually need
possibly because he believes it, though that wouldnt contradict also wanting to bring in another striker for now
cos he wants other selling teams to believe that we are not that bothered about replacing long

many reasons, all of whichhave been demostrated in the past by reading FC

Like any manager would ever dream of slagging off his charges in public. 90% of football is about confidence. I would have thought that Shane Long's progress last season would have been enough to prove this.

Isn't that second quote, according to many peoples logic, just going to make other clubs bump up the price for any of our targets because they know we want to buy players?

Alternatively, it has been released in an attempt to calm the teeth grinding of those that feel the club should be spunking money left, right and centre on replacements.

It will then be followed up on 1st Sept with a statement saying:

We had the opportunity and financial backing in place but felt that the sums of money being asked for didn't represent value for money. Additionally Brian McDermott feels that his current squad is more than adequate for the challenges of this season

DOYLERSAROYALER ...can anybody explain why the club seem intent on making any transfer fee "undisclosed" ? ...seems underhand as most transfer fees around are transparent ........

Is it a tax scam ? ...because it can't be to make other clubs unaware of our newly received bounty, as we never spend it anyway

Because we're really clever in the way we do these things, with lots of clever add-ons in addition to the base fee (appearences, WBA staying up and do on). So the headline figure and what we actually may get in the end are two quite different things

Plus if the fee is paid in installments (as we're usually good at, too) it stops people thinking we've got £^M cash sitting there to spend tomorrow. (But they'll still think this anyway, of course)

With your knowledge of football, I'm really surprised to see you come out with that last bit.

Rest assured, people inside the game will have a pretty good idea of how much has/will change hands (that's what some of them are paid to know/find out). Asfor the bit about outsiders thinking we have all that cash sitting there to spend, it's all relative. RFC don't yet have all of the cash, but any deals they strike are likely to be structured on a similar basis. Therefore, if we sign a player for a headline £4M, not only will pigs be cleared for take off but also the club won't be stumping up £4M up front.

FTR, I wasn't talking about other clubs - everyone in football knows exactly what's happening at every club, and the details of everyone else's deals and contracts. It was more a flippant comment aimed at supporters thinking we ave lots of money sitting around in the bank right now.

BTW, there's a question waiting for you to answer on the "Stoke" thread.
