Mr.T10 Legsofwood- Absolute shit! We are never gonna win a game with this big pile of oxf*rd in our team. McCleary IN! To play behind ALF!

I knew Leigertwood would get stick today and I feel that he isn't up to playing Premier League football (QPR bombed him out, as they did with Gorkss who Brian finally has sussed out to be inadequate at this level) HOWEVER it is clear that he is retained in midfield for his relative 1)height at set pieces, which remain our likeliest (only?) opportunity of scoring a goal. 2)Tabb doesn't offer any such threat. I thought 3) Leigertwood played his own part in a good point today in his own 'spoiling' role.

1) I am sorry but does not win headers and not a danger man so he is not.

2) I agree but wins more headers. Tabb is not good enough, reason why I would not make a swap for Legsofwood and Tabb.

3) Good point, yes but could/should have been all three. He gives the ball away and is more of a nuisance than anything. He did not win tackles and gave away stupid free kicks so if that was his role than I have missed a trick.

Extra cautious today against Swansea with the team set up by McDermott not to lose.

Pearce and Karacan were excellent with Fed's coming to the rescue on two occasions

floyd__streete Observations of the day: good fancy dress effort by 1/4 of the North Stand turning up dressed as blue seats. Wet day, not famous opposition, so the flaky nature of our support was shown up yet again.

To those who chanted 'boring boring Swansea' midway through the first half as they passed us off the park with their dainty little triangles: I'd rather watch their brand of football than ours, any day of the week. Probably the same clueless morons who chanted for Le Fondre to be introduced at City, when the main reason we were hanging on for a point was the 4-5-1 formation and the personnel selected.

This was another good effort today, we showed good shape and defended well. We are still wretchedly poor in possession, but at least we haven't been roundly humiliated in the past two games in the way we were in the preceeding too.

Both teams teams were poor in keeping possession.

Errr... :?

I would suggest that that, under pressure, they played the ball out of play, or to the Opposition as much as as we did.

Trouble is, in the first half especially, we were too keen to sit back and watch them pass.

In the second half however, when we hassled them, they were generally inaccurate.

I'm really getting sick of how poor Pogrebnyak is playing. Don't get me wrong, I understand that we need to thread it through to him on the floor more as he seems incapable of winning 50 50s and he doesn't get enough service. His level of performance when he has the ball however is unacceptable. Today was a fine example, he made the wrong decision a couple of times when in promising positions and when Le Fondre came on we looked far more threatening.

I just hope we can bring in a player in January who works better with him than our current players, because we're not getting the best out of him.

A pretty dull first half, where Swansea passed the ball around for 40 minutes, without any cutting edge and we were playing compact and deep, with the obligatory hoof up to Pog when we would finally break up play. We must have completed about 20 passes in total, in the first half.

Second half was definitely better. Guthrie really got involved (can't fault his effort or passion, he was flying in to challenges) and him and Karacan really worked well together. They both seemed to be able to press a lot better then the rest of our side, and subsequently got a lot closer to the Swansea midfield. We showed them way too much respect in the first half, not pressing them. They are a good footballing side but there are very few players in the world who can collect the ball whilst under pressure from two/three men and still retain possession with ease. Ledge was careless on the ball again but he definitely played a good hand in this point. A number of times he anticipated well and cut out through balls as well as winning challenges in the middle of the park.

Pearce and Mariappa were solid at the back, and have done well in these last two games, although a lot of that might be to do with the extra man in midfield.

Feel sorry for Pog, he's putting plenty of effort in but just not getting any service or even players up around him quick enough to help him out. We're starting off games on the backfoot and subsequently his time on the pitch is spent chasing the ball or trying to win 50/50 balls in the air. We looked better when ALF came on but I think that was also as a result of actually getting amongst Swansea way higher up the pitch.

MOTM - I'll say Karacan. Honourable mentions to Guthrie, Fed and both CBs.

Copy-and-paste from my Tilehurst End match report but this was my sum-up.

Federici 7;
Gunter 6; Pearce 8, Mariappa 6, Harte 7;
Kebe 6, Leigertwood 5, Karacan 7, Guthrie 7, McAnuff 6 (Robson-Kanu 6);
Pogrebnyak 5 (Le Fondre 7)

Another positive defensive performance from Reading saw them keep a much-needed clean sheet, which would have looked so much more impressive had they held on last Saturday at the Etihad. That's just one goal conceded in 180+ minutes for the Royals against two decent sides - a far cry from the five conceded at home to Arsenal. The shift to 4-5-1 has been instrumental in that defensive improvement, but what it gives us at the back it most certainly takes away going forward. As noted before, Jimmy Kebe in the first half was effectively playing in a 5-man defence, severely limiting any opportunities Reading had to get forward. Any time we did, it was a hoof down field or a defensive mistake which opened things up, rather than any effective possession.

As frustrating as it was though, it stifled Swansea. They may have had 65% possession in the first 45 but it was all short passes around the Reading half, with frustration or lack of opportunity leading only to long shots which didn't come anywhere near to troubling Adam Federici. The second half opened up more as both teams aimed for a more incisive style of play, but in truth it was obvious that Reading were still coming to terms with their attacking options in this formation. West Ham in three days' time might see a return to 4-4-2 but in tight games against 5-man midfields we've certainly shown that we have enough to hold on and perhaps even nick all three points.

A quick word about Lady Luck, too. Adam Le Fondre had a goal disallowed for handball after punching the ball into Michel Vorm's net, but it was almost three months ago that Demba Ba did exactly the same to earn Newcastle United a share of the points at the Mad Stad. Danny Guthrie could have been awarded a penalty too - the decisions just don't seem to be going Reading's way at the moment. But dwelling on the negatives would spoil a good performance. If it were a boxing match, we'd perhaps have shaded it on points - but sadly knockout is the only way to get 3 points in football, and Reading didn't quite have enough to deliver that killer blow.

1. Similar fancy dress in the East Stand (observed from the West - I expect it was similar in the West when viewed from the N or the E.

2. I hope you are in the minority. If I had to watch a team playing keep ball without penetrating the opposition half for over 10 mins every week I'd soon give up. Our harum scarum style does, at least, entertain.

Poor first half. Second half was better. I felt we defended way to deep and the midfield weren't quick enough to support Pog. Feds looks like he's getting back to his best.
Not a great deal of contenders, but my MOM was Karacan. I thought Ledge gave the ball away too much.

Typically english attitude to football, hence why our national team have always been and always will be third rate.

Happy with the point, gives us something to build on. Great to have Jem back, really have missed him, his mobility stops teams from cutting us open through the middle

4-5-1 has to be the way to go, we are clearly hard to play against with this system, just imagine if you took Ledge out and put Arshavin in, that set up would be capable of getting a run off wins. Would probably see the best of Pog aswell. Feel sorry for him, he literally gets no service. People moan he doesnt close down and that, but its not his fault he isnt quick.

Really important we beat West ham, to give the new signings something to build on. Odds on to go down ovbiously, but there is still hope if they can add players to make the 4-5-1 work

My ratings

Fed- 8
Gunter- 7
Harte- 7
Marriappa- 8
Pearce- 8
Kebe - 5
Mcanuff- 5
Ledge- 5
Karacan- 8
Guthrie- 7
Pog- 5

Hmm, so you'd prefer to etch a team aimlessly pass the ball around in their own half rather than counter attacking at pace, and I wouldn't. Oh, and our national team is hardly third rate, having reached the knock out stages of the last few tournaments and only beaten on penalties. We may not be great but to use the term third rate is off the mark I think.

Careful, I always thought that you loved your club because everything about us was/is generally crap (and I like and respect you for that.)

You're beginning to send out mixed messages.....

Absolutely no point chasing shadows knackering themselves out in the first half of the game as Swansea pass it about in their half between their back 4.

Not sure I understand your point.

What I was saying was: in the first half we watched them pass, pass and pass again (much to the delight of pundits who delight in proclaiming them to be be a joy to watch). In the second half we hurried them and their passing/ball retention/composure was no better than ours, the game got scrappier and we were probably slightly less unlikely to score than they were.

What was your point again?

When do we ever counter attack with pace?
Pass the ball around getting nowhere, counter attacking, we do neither!
