Fox Talbot Anyway, to return to the OP, Jack Mansell was the manager for 10.5 months of 1971 and it all went terribly wrong with our first relegation for 40 years then a failure to challenge for promo from Div 4.

The final straw was a 1-8 home defeat for Reading Reserves (v Cardiff, P.King (6)) after which he was sacked the next morning. Sacked after a reserves defeat!


...and I think the first team had just lost 5-0 at Workington

I wrote to Charlie Hurley after he was sacked to express my regret that he had been sacked and gratitude (as a fan) for what he had done during his time with us. Received a really nice hand written reply from the great man saying how his dismissal was just one of those things that happens in football and wishing the club and me well for the future. I still have that letter somewhere, along with memorabilia such as autographed photos of the god that Hurley brought to Reading.
