Mid Sussex Royal It could be worse - last time we were relegated to this league we lost our first 2 games 3-0 and 4-1
Don't know if we've all dropped through a time warp to 25 years ago but seems there are definite comparisons to be had.
1. Reading were a team distinctly under performing
2. Reading were relegated after appointing inept management
3. While the financial side was stable and there was no such thing as FFP, JM was out of the country and the the club was signing as many largely useless players as Tommy Burns could identify (and no doubt the club would have been done by FFP at some point had it been a thing then)
4. Reading lost the first two games of the season by 0-3 and 1-4 and looked utterly and completely inept despite an underlying optimism that relegation would allow the club to reset and be challengers
5. Reading's form after the above defeats was a run of 7 successive league defeats and 12 successive league defeats away from home
6. The third league game was the first at the Mad Stad and resulted in a 3-0 home win
7. However things still stayed **** with a second league win not being managed for another 7 league games and the successive away wins eventually reaching 15, culminating in a fantastic 2-1 defeat at ultimately relegated Macclesfield (who managed to score their first home goals that season when Charity FC rolled into town)
Looking specifically at the ineptness of the league season so far the only positives I can take are the facts that the officiating has been utterly diabolical and the two goals that have defeated Reading could both be termed farcical freaks of nature, seemingly indicative of Reading just not getting any good luck whatsoever. But overall the team and management are completely to blame for the mess, especially in the final third with still absolutely no real threat being posed and a thoroughly decent striker still being wasted with the same cr@p tactics that the team under different management were using last season.
Think I'd expect Reading to beat Cheltenham but then find themselves struggling against both Stevenage and Exeter as these teams have a bit about them going forward. Could be October before the club find any half decent run of form!
