My only dreams were that the season would be a success, regardless of where we are I want us to do well, I think that is why i dislike the weakened teams in the cups, last season I did not feel we were playing to survive, I only hope that this coming season we play to succeeed rather than to survive. What happens happens, so lets go for it, and see what occurs.

I remember the Simod Cup season when the best team was used in the cuo, and the boring negative team and tactics in the league, that season I felt the Simod team would have kept us at that level, but Branny prefferred the dull footy in the league.

In the dull days of the early to mid 70's my dreams were: -

We would sign players that I'd actually heard of,

Now and again a big team would come in and sign one of our players for big money, and that that player would become a success in the top division (it was too much to think that Reading would get there, so basking in reflected glory was all I could hope for!),

We had a bigger, better ground ( I think my ideal ground was something based on Griffin Park!!!)

I started watching in about 1973 so my dreams have also changed a bit.

Promotion to the next level, or avoiding the drop to the lower one.

Now: Establishing ourselves as a premiership club.

In a year or two: (Providing that the immediate dream is realised) Win something. If it isn't the dream will be to get back.

The 17 Bus I remember the Simod Cup season when the best team was used in the cuo,

Surely one of the joys of the Simod win was that it was NOT our best team playing !!

Mick Tait up front ????

Disagree we beat teams above us, while failing to win in the league, something was amiss that season

Seeing us beat, and become better than Ispwich. It was a long time ago, probably about 99/00 or 00/01, was watching Ipswich on tv in the FA Cup. Remember saying to my dad "Look, theres Halifax. We saw them play!". They probably had very similar kits or something like that. It was about a week after we had watched Reading lose 1-0 to Halifax, Parky got sent off. Anyway, so my dad replyed "Thats not Halifax, thats Ipswich. Reading will never be as good as them"

I guess since then that was my hopes for the royals!

For someone who started going to games on a regular basis from the early 80s onwards I would have to say my ambition was for us to be an established Second tier club with "big" gates of 8 or 9,000!!

I wanted us to be a mid-table Second Division side playing attractive football and in the late 80s thought that we should have been where Swindon were at the time and that we had the potential to be in a similar position if not better supported.

This came to fruition under Mark McGhee really after the false dawn of the 86/87 and awful 87/88 seasons in the second tier.

What summed RFC up for a lot of people RFC fans and non-RFC fans in Reading was that as soon as something looks good you can guarantee RFC would put a stop to it and 87/88 pre-season when we sold the spine of the team in Wood, Hurlock, Senior and Bremner, just reinforced most of the town's pessimism that Reading as a club did not really want to go too far.

This definitely tempered my thinking as a youngster as what was a realistic aim for RFC...then came along Sir John, Madejski Stadium and the final piece of the jigsaw Sir Steve!!!

My readjusted ambition as others have already said is to stay competing in the top flight and win a major honour which is realistically the League or FA Cup.

biscuitsrus Not a dreaming person, I just thought I wanted us to win the game and the one after etc.

The Prem is reality.

Now we know that Sir Steve uses this website.

That we'd survive until the 3rd Round of the Cup and then giant kill someone

That one day we'd have a team good enough to survive longer in the 2nd Division/Championship than the 5 seasons we manged to put together better 1926 and 1931 (still waiting on that count!)

That one day we'd reach the 5th round of the cup.

Now its just to become a perennial Premiership team with odd forays into Europe and making the 6th Round of the FA Cup.

However in moments of madness its winning the damn league itself!

Started watching in 66 and my only wish was to see Reading in the old Div 2. Was gutted when we blew it in 69/70 after being top in February. Had to wait 20 years before we finally made it in 86 - with a few dips in to Div 4 in between. Not once - even in my most optimistic mode - did I ever contemplate us reaching the top division!
