John Halls, I buy that one - well actually I wouldn't.

Halford was sold on for more, i.e. compared to what Sunderland would have paid for him we got a discount.

Durberry - we paid a Championship price for someone who held his own last season.

Shorey - £25k and first England cap for over 100 years.
Doyle - £78k and looks like he is worth £10M
Shaka - top keeper, free signing and biggest sale before Halford (?)

Can't think of any reasons (or signings) better than those 3.

The obvious Doyle, Kitson, Shorey come out here (a combined £350k ish!).

So

Ingemarsson (Wolves, Free to £100,000 I believe, though undisclosed)
Sonko (Brentford, Free)
Sidwell (Arsenal, somewhere between 75,000 and 200,000 - either way, a bargain)
Hahnemann (Fulham, Free)

When was the last time we bought a player for solid money, and got full dollar out of it?

Convey for the one damn good season, comes close............

Ivar, Sonko and Sidwell all made their names at Brentford and we got a grand total of zero pounds and zero pence for them (Sidwell was on loan mind). Steve Hunt must also be a bargain based on the number of games he played in the premiership last season.

And we got.............. Brooker!

But I reckon your greatest bargain player is Cureton. If he had not scored that goal would you have got out of league 1?

Coppell and Downes were pretty good business too.

In fact I need to go and lie in a darkened room and dream of trips to Macclesfield and Accrington.

Not sure they did to be honest !

Agreed they played for you but none of them were really 'names' outside West London. I'd argue that they made huge strides after joining us.

In fact any player who we acquired up to the mid 80's who turned out to be more than half decent had to be seen as a bargain, because we never paid any kind of fee for any player.

(when was our first £100k+ signing?)

Hurlock? Curle? Moran was signed for an astonshing £250K in Nov 87.

Hurlock cost a then record £82,000 so Curle must have been our first £100,000+ signing.

Colin Gordon cost £85,000 IIRC. Conversely, there was a fine example of needlessly pissing a large amount of money away.

What makes me laugh though is that we spent £85,000 on Gordon, £250,000 on Moran, £125,000 on Whitehurst then go and win the Simod Cup with a winger and defensive midfielder up front who cost nothing between them because all our forwards were either shit, sold or cup tied.
