Neither is realistic or particularly interesting, it's just an extrapolation of numbers over a completely different set of fixtures.

Snowball Based on Current Points and maintaining the Last 17 Games form for the next 23 Games

Final Table would look like this

90.0 Points Southampton
84.5 Points West Ham
84.5 Points Boro
79.5 Points Hull
79.3 Points Reading
77.0 Points Cardiff

73.0 Points Leeds
69.0 Points Burnley
67.0 Points Blackpool
66.0 Points Birmingham

Very similar to last season, but this season we don't need such a stupendous run to manage it

5 Reading P46 +26 77 Points

I think the question on everyone's lips is HOW DID TWO TEAMS MANAGE TO GET HALF POINTS??? And Reading a point three?! Is it goal difference or something? Or did we get docked .7 for playing Bongani KhumaLOL at the start of the season?

What about maintaining the last 6 games form (the "typical" form table) for the next 23 games. This is relevant to my interests. And, I'm sure, entirely not about to happen.

Why should "last six games" be the key statistic?

Why not 9. or 12 or 15, or 16 or 17 or 18 or 19, or 23 or 46?

Six game-form is interesting but can often be misleading as a side, randomly
could have had 4-5-6 games away or 4-5-6 at home, and played all poor sides
or all top sides.

Obviously 23 games when you have played all the other sides is a decent stat.
Where it fails (partly) is to see how sides CHANGE

Here is the table after six games. Brighton were TOP and Reading were second bottom

01 6 5-1 -0 3 0 11-4 +7 16 Points 2.67 Brighton and Hove A
23 6 1-1-4 1 3 05-8 -3 04 Points 0.67 Reading

and now?

01 23 +23 47 Southampton
06 23 +08 36 Reading
11 23 -03 32 Brighton and Hove A

From 22 places behind to 5 in front. A SIXTEEN point turn-round in 17 games, a 21 goal better GD difference

It's merely the numbers. I think I can work out that clubs eventually get their points in whole numbers.

Had I rounded up or down some tosser would've complained about that too

Not sensitive, just making the point that you are a miserable sod with nothing better to do than complain.

Imagine a thread called "Last Season - This Season" with instructions to go to various
web-sites and look up the stats, return and discuss. Utter stupidity.

This is a harmless thread comparing last year's WLD statistics with this year's.

You have managed to complain about the choice of run-length, now complained
that we can look up the stats elsewhere (oh really, didn't know that) then
complained that the stats aren't interesting anyway and the fixtures are
completely different. (Really? You mean QPR, Norwich and Swansea aren't in our league this year?"

I disagree with you on all your points.

The 23 Games last season compared to 23 this season is VERY significant.
In both seasons we had to make dramatic adjustments to the loss of important players.
In both seasons we have had to bed-in a new defence.
In both seasons, no striker had "taken off" before Xmas.

The tables are quite similar

1 23 +23 47 v 47 +28 Southampton/QPR
2 23 +17 44 v 40 +12 West Ham/Cardiff
3 23 +10 44 v 40 +07 Middlesbrough/Swansea (24 Games)
4 23 +11 39 v 40 +06 Cardiff/Leeds (24 Games)
5 23 +03 39 v 39 +04 Hull/Norwich

Forgetting stats - but instead looking at the current team versus last season's team man for man - I think there is now real cause for hope.

Fed 2011>>>>>>>>>>>Fed 2010 he seems to have largely cut out the silly errors of last season
Cummings>>>>>>>>>Griffin at RB - he really has come into his own
Pearce 2011>>>>>>>>Pearce 2010 - again a young player really coming good now
Gorkks>>>>>>>>>>>>Mills - a great improvement as far as I can see. Matt Mills was an enigma - a big game player but inconsistent
Harte/Griffin/Mills 2011 about equal to Harte 2011 - it has not been a problem but this has not been a settled position this season
Kebe 2011<<<<<<<<< not as good as Kebe 2010 but he is improving now
Legs 2011 now about the same level as Legs 2010
Karacan 2011>>>>> a little improved on Karacan 2010
McAnuff 2011 about the same as McAnuff 2010
Hunt/ALF 2011 about the same as Hunt/Church 2010
Church<<<<<<<<<<<<<<Long 2010 - the one area of concern. I like Church but he has yet to be anything like the player that Long became. He is a completely different type of player to Long to be fair and we simply don't have that focal target man type player in the squad at the moment. If we had one (say Long and ALF up front) I really think automatic promotion would be a good bet.

The good news is we are probably stronger at the back, very good in midfield, but just a little lacking up front at the moment.

Agree, in most part, HRK is also >>>>> than HRK of 2010 and, I would say, McAnuff (last 6 games) >>>>> McAnuff 2010 and start of 2011.... long may this form from Jobi continue!!

Someone else losing a bit of perspective here.

Fwiw, if you bother to read my post and Snowball's preceding it, I simply questioned a) the validity of extrapolating one run of games over a period of a completely different set of games, and b) that in that preceding post Snowball wasn't comparing to last season but simply stating some facts in isolation, hence why I linked to the football365 page showing the same and asked how if compared to 2010/11 (which Snowball then provided - so quite why he decided to follow it up with the snide remarks again is beyond me).

So far from not being interested, I am particularly interested (anyone with a passing knowledge of the cricket thread would know how much stats turn me on), just questioned the logic. Not a complaint, not a moan, just a comment. I thought this board was about more than just nodding in quiet agreement!

It was a moan, one of four different moans.

You just can't help yourself.

Will you EVER get over being so WRONG about Long?

It wasn't a moan, it was an opinion. Seriously, have the humility to just take my opinion on the chin and move on. Your constant sniping at me is tiring. I have posted a few times how pleased I was Shane Long proved me wrong.

This looks rather nice....apologies if seen already. We don't usually hit a good patch like this until much later in the season! Well done BM you have excelled yourself yet again.

Please don't give us manager of the month though - give it to Howe instead!

Amazing stat here

(considering we are in 6th and top of the form tables, and have scored first in our last 3 games)

Table for "Scored First"

23rd P23 8 34.7% Reading
24th P23 7 30.4% Doncaster Rovers

Only amazing if you choose to forget that for most of the season we've been bemoaning our lack of goals in the first hour of games.

As I mentioned on your other thread, it's one of the contributors to our good record on 'points lost from a winning position'.

You don't think it pretty damn amazing that we can go sixth and
looking strong while being the 23rd, second-worst club at scoring first?

I find that quite staggering.

I would expect the |scores first" table to correlate pretty
well with the actual table.

To me it says something amazing about tactics/spirit/fitness
though I don't buy that we really ARE a noticeably fitter side
