As for burgerg8 - That's what a chap told me who was at the game. Said TROLI had too many shandy's and it all kicked off over a burger.

LUX just checked, under 19K in 1992 and 1993. In the top division.

So what's the conclusion there?

Going to football has to be one of the least enjoyable ways to spend an afternoon these days. Expensive, boring and almost everyone involved from the players to the fans is a colossal twat.

On the rare occasions I go I still enjoy the drinking, the drugs, the whoring and the windmilling, but I don't think I've enjoyed a game since the first half of the quarter final against Aston Villa.

I used to go to probably about 60% of the away games every season, but can't really be bothered anymore. Only been to Yeovil this season, but going to Charlton and Bournemouth in the next few weeks. I'd never been to Bournemouth or Yeovil before and they're relatively short trips so was quite keen to go to them before the season even began.

When I started going to away games in the 1980's it was far more affordable than it is now - not just the admission price but the cost involved in getting there.

I used to like visiting new grounds as they were all different and had their own characteristics - now they are all just rows of plastic seats and lack any character; plus most of the new builds are built out of town making travelling by train more difficult.

I suppose that Reading can take lessons on support from many, many clubs.

But not Chelsea.

It would be interesting to be able to see the league table of away following season by season.

It's my perception that when we were in the bottom two divisions we were not a particularly well followed team but that the away support really seemed to increase the season after we lost the play off to Bolton. I'd say our support would have compared pretty favourably with a number of similar size clubs from that time on and naturally the number of people going away is going to be pretty high in Championship winning seasons and in our Premier League years.

I think on our first stay at that level people were willing to pay the high ticket prices as it was the first time we'd played in the Premier League. My feeling is that last season the cost had risen too far for some people especially as away performances were in general poor.

I sense a real drop off in our away support this season and I think there's a number of reasons. Ticket prices are too high, most of the clubs in the Championship have become very familiar opponents over the last decade and, despite the fact that we've got a decent away record, the whole season just never seems to have quite got going. I think you could add that I think some of our fans have never been really sure what they want from the season and don't believe this team has the capability of going up anyway and certainly not of competing in the top flight.

I go to away days for the day out, but if the cost rises any higher I cannot afford to go, it's at a ridiculous cost now. The price isn't worth the game, but it's worth an excuse for a day out.

It seems that even the middle class are now getting priced out of football.

Some people I know went to Millwall away this season and moaned about

Silly kids standing all the game (2 of them are fairly old and don't want to stand the entire 90mins but had no choice if they wanted to see)
Drunken idiots fighting over a burger
Moronic songs

They said they wouldn't go to another away game.

TBF - that's why terracing was always good. Clubs would have a seating away section plus terracing. Now it's all seats it's ruined it for older fans who don't want to stand the entire game.

So you don't know for certain if that was what it was about or not?
