Stooper
spickroyal Yep, a true classic.

Has got me thinking back to those days. Thinking back a couple of years to 95, a 3-0 home victory against Swindon (Archie HT IIRC) and an end of season 2-1 win against Bolton also rank highly for me.

I remember that Swindon match.

April fools day 95 wasn't it? Then Nogan got a hat trick the week after against Port Vale.

And if we'd have kept the lead all the way to the end instead of drawing we'd have had the elusive 2 points needed to get the automatic promotion spot that year

RoyalBlue With regards to the Wolves game, am I imagining things or did a certain Mr Williams end up in the dressing room before the end of the game? I have a vague recollection of a story circulating that he heard the roar when the first goal for us went in, asked what had happened and was told Lovell had just equalised. When the second roar went up, he is reported as having said 'Not that b*stard Archie again?!' only to receive the answer in the affirmative.

It was Gilkes. Sitting on the treatment table having gone off injured.

We finished on 79 points that year compared to Middlesbrough's 82. so we'd have still finished 1 point behind Middlesbrough that year if we'd have beaten Port Vale. Now if we'd have beaten the likes of Notts County away we'd have finished as Champions. But as I read in a Heaven 11 issue that season, every win at Ayresome Park brings a defeat at Meadow Lane...

Or if we had beaten Boro at home instead of drawing.

2 extra points to us, 1 off their total..

Not quite.

We were the only team that won over that last weekend's set of matches, because the other teams knew they were in the play-offs already and so they eased off.

If first place was still to play for I'm sure they'd have made more of an effort.

Agreed.

Bolton played a woeful Burnley side that weekend, rested a load of players and lost; had they needed the 3 points they would have almost certainly got them.

Still narked that the club never did season review videos of our other seasons from that period. Hoping that perhaps one day the club will do a DVD of high and lowlights from the later Q&G, Bullivant and Burns eras...

Does anybody have any video footage that they taped from this era?

I've got some 'coast to coast' footage of seasons 91/92 & 92/93 and could arrange a swap deal.

Thing is though (and what most people forget), for the first 75 or so minutes until they scored it wasn't anywhere near being a 'classic'.

Given it was a late start to the second half, their goal went in at around 4:40 and we all thought we'd blown it and McGhee was finally going to get one over on us. No-one around me realised there were still 15 minutes to play. Then of course Gilkesy got injured and caused there to be, what, 5 minutes of extra time? During which injury time Archie scored twice and sent the South Bank into absolute rapture.

Agreed to point. The football may not have been up there but the atmosphere was something else that day. It was a really warm day, unusually so at the time - much like today! Hence it's in my top 3.
