Handsome Man I'm very sad he died - so young. etc - but surely nobody is going to try and pretend that his time at Reading was anything but the worst spell of management we have ever had. £4.5 million on players so crap that poor Pardew had to spend the next two years gradually getting rid of them. Oster might not be popular, and Fae might not have been a success, but Sean Evers and James McIntyre were £920,000 on players who wouldn't get a place in a decent school team. Admittedly he bought Murty, but for £800,000 as an injured winger, unable to play much for a season or so. We have had the best spell for watching Reading over the last few years, and I know when I think this started - the day that Pardew arrived: he bought Robinson. who wasn't crap; he bought Butler who was brilliant; we beat Stoke in front of millions of their fans; everything seemed good again..

I'll take your Sean Evers and Jimmy Mac for £920,000 and raise you a Greg Halford and Emerse Fae for £5,000,000. I'll even chuck in the fact that the man who bought us the latter is officially the best manager we've had at the club.

So had the performances against the likes of Ipswich and Charlton where we lost but played well been rewarded with points and had Burns rescued our season in the meagre amount of games he had to do so ensuring we kicked off at the Mad Stad in the Championship, would things have been totally different?

Paul Brayson was shite - fact
Stuart Gray was technically gifted but fcuked when he came to us - coulda been a hell of a decent full back otherwise
Andy MaClaren was a junkie, but also a hell of a footballer (did Burns know about his problems? Did SSC make the same mistake 10 years later?)
Van Der Kwaak also shite
Elroy Kromheer, Lanky Dutch CB also shite
Nicky Forster - IMO he was a legend for us
Murty - current club captain
Alan Maybury - consistent Championship performer currently
Chris Casper - looked like he was gonna be awersome until that fcuker at Cardiff done him
Jimmy Mac - I rated him highly - one of the most under rated players Burns bought, quality in the air and scored some belters for us (Walsall away)
Grant Brebner - busy little midfielder - looked awesome but left after a games played clause debacle
Robert Fleck - LOL

Some utter shite but some excellent punts he made - just never worked out for him.

Knobheads dedicating a 'Burns wasn't all that' thread to him really need to get a grip of themselves, especially when signing off with condolences to his family.

Utter trash thread.

Spot on with your analysis Super Kevin Bremner. I'm staggered at Handsome Man's assessment of Jimmy Mac - but then maybe he was one of the *rsehold boo boys who singled him out as official scapegoat. Despite frequently being played out of position and continually being picked on by the boo boys, he always gave his all, turned in some decent performances and in the end won over everyone but the hardcore (couldn't even get in the school football team) boo boys.

Spot on.

A disgrace of a thread, let alone being hugely debatable anyway.

Can mods show some respect to our old manager and lock this thread please???

I don't see a problem with debating Burns' qualities as a manager on a Reading FC messageboard at this time.

Some may find the timing insensitive and even a bit offensive. This may seem a little melodramatic but honestly Platypuss, what's the point of there being a new Tommy Burns thread which is just some knobhead's way of trying to get a bit of attention.

'Look at me disagreeing with what's already been written elsewhere about Tommy Burns. Whilst everyone else says what a great bloke he was I'll be all contraversial and speak ill of the dead.'

People will always bring up this kind of talk at a time like this - it's unavoidable.
This way the "critical" posts can be kept on this thread while the other thread can be kept for the genuine condolences.

It's not as if the thread title is that oblique.

Admin would have a full time job kicking off all the abusive posters! :)

If you can't take it don't post it (and you must know you are being obnoxious and insensitive?)
