Royalee Perhaps 'everyone' is wrong, but if you look at what Gary Johnson has said, along with everyone else in football, they all feel that it's a very rash decision. .

How often do you see a manager sacked and people within the game say it was the right decision?

shoey as previously said the club has been on market since before our prem days and during and now, no one with any decent money or love for the club and its future has turned up!

Madejski wants to sell the club, Sullivan and Gold wanted to sell Birmingham. Look at the completely different ways they went about it and who the winners are.

Never, but they don't comment either way most of the time.

Would Hughes still be managing Citeh if they were 1 place off relegation on 16/12/09?
Will the next Manchester United manager get 4 years to win his first trophy and then a few more on top of that to win his first title?
If people care or give a shiny shite about 'being laughed at' (whoever they are) that's your problem.
Anyone who throws their toys out and wishes his team relegated, just because their managerial preferences are different - what a stand-up guy!
There's loads more, but I'm starving!

Best post from you for a long time Royalee. But folk like ferguson will not see us, "as we are" they will see money and a chance to better themselves. S Coppell was backed for longer than you or others wanted, why???? Because he was doing a good job with what he was given, it is slowly coming out as to why BR went. JM as good as said when asked in his interview on BBC Berks about bringing in new players. He asked how many are needed, as we already have one of the largest squads in this division. ( i dont know if we actually do have such a large squad).

I have said it before we cannot afford to be paying massive wages for guys not involved in the 1st team squad, the trick is to keep everyone fit and playing, it partly shows why long term injuries like Armstrongs are so bad for a club, same with N Hunt, we are paying two guys a lot of money, if last seasons figures are to be believed, to not partake, now that is not their fault, but the manager has to deal with that fact, hence a loan to cover Armstrong, and 3 forwards still on wages in Rasiak, Long and Church, I can see why JM says we cannot afford more.

remains to be seen, a club in Englands second City, or one to a town west of london. Tho we did have more ST holders than them last season!!

First of all, I don't want to see us relegated you total goon.

Secondly, Man City's expectations and starting point are far higher than ours, as is United's now - thanks to Ferguson.

Thirdly...

19 games played
4 wins
8 draws
7 defeats

Not Rodgers, but Coppell's last 19 games at the club.

Poison chalice.

We're potentially a bigger club than Birmingham - look at our catchment area and lack of competitors compared to Villa, Wolves and West Brom up the road from them.

They are not really looking at bigger clubs, they are looking to more than that, posssible ground sharing with Villa, they are looking at the possibility of a top 6 club in the prem, IMHO, with a new ground, cheaper costs if shared, it has to be more likely in the second biggest city, thats the gamble they are working on IMHO.

We probably do have one of the larger squads in the division, but most of the numbers are kids and players not good enough for the level.

That's part of the problem.

I'm not sure Coppell was given time because he was doing the best with what he had, I think it was more that it was easier to stay with him and, as someone posted in another thread, his previous success bought him that time.

If Madejski's next appointment fails then he has to appoint another new guy. He doesn't have to fall on his sword over it or anything like that, how can he when there doesn't seem to be anyone willing to take it over. I trust Madejski to look after the club as he has it's best interests at heart. He'll make mistakes along the way, as all Chairman will, but I'd rather he was in control rather than someone like Hicks/Gillette or the revolving door at Pompey.

Whoever the next guy is will have an easier time that Rodgers. Rodgers followed Coppell and still had to deal with the high, and unrealistic, expectations of the fans who fell for the PR and spin building up the quality in the squad. Whoever comes in now takes over a squad with fans expectations much lower (and realistic) because of the position we're in, if they finish with a run of form thats equivalent to finishing 14th people will say they've done a reasonable job. If Rodgers had got us to 14th it would've been seen a failure by many of those same people.

Timing is everything.

Last season was certainly cut in two distinct parts, those last 19 games represents the momentum that Rodgers took over, even without losing the players we did.

By the same token we had Nigel Howe banging on about us being the new Arsenal and expanding our own stadium (pity he couldn't follow his favourite club more closely though and back our manager like they do, he obviously wasn't looking hard enough at what they do). Fact is our attendances have been higher than theirs and we've managed to finish a season higher than them in the Premiership in recent years, although they're doing well this season after standing by their manager.

Royalee Sure - look at our form from February last season and we averaged 1.05 points per game including the playoffs, WITH Doyle, Kitson and Lita at the club in addition to the others we sold. In the November and December, we have averaged 1.3 points per game and this was during a time when we threw away points at Derby at at home to Scunthorpe, the latter being a game we should have won at ease and would have if we'd had someone even half as good as Doyle. If the club based the sacking on performances as they say, then why didn't this happen after the QPR game, as performances and results have improved considerably since then and one would have though they would continue to get better with the addition of at least one striker with the return of Church and Long (even if Long is shit)?

I find it quite baffling that the last time we asset stripped (and that's exactly what we're doing to this business, not 'cutting cloth' or 'ensuring our future' and all the other rubbish coming out of the club - to do these you still need to bring in suitable replacements on lower wages which Rodgers wasn't able to do in terms of our attacking options), when we sold Shaka, Osborn, Taylor and so forth, we stayed up by the skin of our teeth focusing on the 'short term' before sacking the new management duo, bringing in Bullivant and getting relegated. Yet in spite of this, when we have done it even more than in '95, Rodgers was expected to somehow turn water into wine with a young squad which he was trying to build and sacked after 4 months of competitive matches into his and Madejski's '3 year plan'. The fact that even this forum, which is renowned for its knee-jerk reactions during Pardew's early days and 2004/5, held a vote in which Rodgers was voted to remain by a majority (however slim it was), says it all.

If you look at the top clubs around, they all (even Man City with Mark Hughes) give their managers time to create THEIR team, and you simply cannot do that inside 6 months. Sir Alex Ferguson could easily have been sacked with a Madejski in charge at Old Trafford during his early days, but their hierarchy actually know a thing or two about football, could see what he was trying to build and reaped the benefits. Our impatient chairman has acted rashly, as if destroying most of his hard work in the last 2 years wasn't bad enough, he has now destroyed the chance of us building a sustainable successful future within his strict budgets. If you look at all of the best parts to our team, all of them were caused by Rodgers - he's brought in Sigurdsson and Church who have shone, Bertrand who has been excellent at left back, and our main goal threat in Rasiak and McAnuff. If you look at McAnuff and Rasiak's history, their performances have dropped significantly when not settled under their manager, so we can kiss bye bye to the Championship.

I've supported Reading for a fair while now and all this time while Madejski has been at the helm, we have looked to build to the future and create something positive, even in the days of Bullivant and Burns - we looked towards the long term. In the last 2 and a half years, that outlook has completely changed, we have looked to get by as cheaply as we can and done a botch job. We thought we had enough players to keep us up in the Premiership and didn't strengthen, we kept hold of Coppell as he seemed the 'safe' option when he wanted out and there was no long term plan, we brought in Rodgers to build for the future once again, but abandon the plan after 6 months, panicking. I have followed this club home and away for years and could never support any other club, but right now with the exception of our youngsters and a handful of dedicated first teamers like Tabb, McAnuff and Rasiak, I feel absolutely nothing for what we have become. We've completely abandoned what we set out to do in favour of short term 'gain', which will be shown up for what it is come May, we treat long-term employees of the club like shit, we treat our fans like idiots and everyone is laughing at us.

Excellent post - so much better than the knee-jerk SC-bashing, and what's more I agree pretty much 100%. It feels like we gave Rodgers a remit and he's been sacked solely for taking more time to fulfil it than originally promised. Given the increased financial constraints, this seems harsh to say the least.

If it was a poisoned chalice, why did he take it?

Why use those teams as a comparison then?

Coppell WON 44.5% of all the RFC matches he managed, he'll go down as the best ever RFC manager to date.
Bodgers' will go down as bad as Terry the Taxi.

Not
Good
Enough.

Lies, damned lies and stats. We 'only' lost 3 of our last 13 regular-season games. That feels like heaven compared to what we are going through now.

I can't believe that I've just read in Get Reading that 'Sir John Madejski refused to speculate on who would be given the job, with chief scout Brian McDermott likely to be given the role until the end of the season'. If so, we're back into a Coppell second half of last season scenario and a team uncertain of their future in the summer and thus not as committed as they could be. The only thing in our favour will be the loyalty given by McDermott and the young players that have something to prove.

Sir John, sort it out or relegation seriously beckons.
