pea Am I the only one who really liked what I saw on Saturday? Yes he needs to build up his fitness and get to know our players but honestly, what were people expecting, the guy is 21, french-speaking, only met the rest of the team when they arrived on Saturday, has only just managed to cement his place in a first team, and at league two level. I thought he did a pretty decent job, got into the right places and was only denied two headed goals by a premiership standard keeper who commands his area brilliantly.

+1

I was speaking up for him.

Unless you are a good athlete I suspect you couldn't, although I understand the point you are making.

I know its the internet but I'm really not a fat bearded nonce.

I wasn't for one moment suggesting that you are. However, I maintain that only good athletes will be able to run further than our players over a 90 minute period. Whilst they don't train specifically for enurance running, nevertheless the type of training that they do will have built their levels of endurance up to a pretty high level.

Just to clarify, it was the 90 minutes of a game, not just me and them, running for 90 minutes. An average Prem midfielder runs 10-11 km in a 90 minute game. OK, with the ball out of play for around 20-25 minutes, you're looking at a solid but slow 10k pace.

Which is exactly the point I'm making. Footballers sprint*.

Malcolm MacDonald did a 10.7, 10.8 s 100m in the late 70s. Christ knows how fast some of them are now.

Indeed they do but repeatedly over a 90 minute period. So their 'fitness/natural conditioning' would be somewhat different from a 'Linford Christie'. Indeed I would suggest it would be somewhere between that and a 400m/800m runner who might undertake repeated sprints with jogged intervals in between as part of their fitness regime.
