Linden Jones' Tash Elm Park Kid andrew1957 Thought RC looked pretty exhausted. I admire his persistence in finally getting the deal over the line. Dealing with Dai must have been like grappling a slippery eel. And although the interview was a mess, he said more to the fans in 5 minutes than we heard from Dai in 7 years,
But one has to say that despite his awful handling of the club, Dai has left us with a good basic infrastructure and it just needs a steady hand to guide the club back to a stable path now. RC did that at Wycombe and will hopefully do so again.
Now for the summer player rebuild.
Dai has left us with an expensive infrastructure that simply isn't supported by the revenue that a club like us can generate. Couhig will do his best to get more money rolling in, but ultimately he took over the club to dismantle a lot of stuff that isn't paying its way.
This is a really important point
I'd urge ppl to reserve judgment before diving all in - that will lead to inevitable disappointment.
The new owners are not sugar daddies with more money than sense....
They are US businessmen who have bought a distressed asset for a lot less than it would otherwise be worth....
In that interview he explicitly states that: "The club should generate the income that it spends"....
Given the current rate of cash burn, how does that happen?
L1 is expensive and Reading's footprint means that it's not sustainable so what happens?
I am not sure I have yet heard a viable strategy for how he will achieve this yet - I know it is early days - but time is of the essence...
It's all going to depend how quickly we can get promoted.
Short term - 1/2 seasons
We can probably hold onto Bearwood and the Academy by upping income a bit and lowering costs a bit. Things like adding 2k to the attendance through renewed optimism even with just a top half season is possible. Plus a bit of merchandising and sponsorship/corporate stuff. Maybe some training ground or event money. And the odd player sale. At the saw time cut the wage bill a bit, contracts over for Button, Bouzanis, Ejaria, Yiadom. L1 Academy players will cost less than Champ Academy players so trim a little there too.
We lost £12m in 23/24
Hopefully a few mil at least less in 24/25
So hopefully we can be down to £6m - £8m loss next season.
If we get to the Championship in that time Bearwood and the Academy become more affordable.
If not, we're going to need to start cutting them. Which is the next round of cost savings to help make us long term sustainable in L1. And those cuts will make a huge difference to our sustainability at this level, if not our prospects for Championship football. But we'd still be better placed to compete in the Champ than we were in the late 90s.
