Biggest ever Royal game?

by PREMIERSHIP_ROYAL » 25 May 2011 13:38

How does the magnitude of Monday compare with other big days of our recent past? With the 90M prize at stake id rank this higher than the Leicester and Derby games in 06, and in terms of days out it already outshines the Walsall final, however being too young to have gone to Wembley for the Bolton game i cant comment on that one, what do the older generation of fans think?

It is a fraction less important than the 1995 Berks & Bucks Senior Cup Final, otherwise it is pretty big - yep.

Think I was at that game. Was it played at Adams Park?

Biggest game? Any game where Jon Parkin plays for the oppo. And yes. The B&B 1995 was at Adams Park. I was there and it was the eveniing that we clinched a play off place as Barnsley failed to win.

To be honest, while it is a big game, i think finishing 2nd in 1995 and never having been in the premierleague before, while being at Elm park, made that game bigger.

This time we have been up before, we were never in the top two, if we lose we may lose the odd player but we have a strong youth team and a committed manager and will hopefully avoid the fate of relegation and 11 years until we make up for the defeat.

If you consider the fact that Bolton yoyoed but are now an established premierleague league club in their new stadium and have had several European runs then I would say winning in 1995 would have meant more. If we win on Monday we're going to be staring at being relegation favourites and face a fight to complete with the likes of wigan to stay in the league. Finishing above Bolton, Stoke, fulham etc will be hard.

Secondly the Derby game was about more than staying in the premierleague. OK shorey wanted to leave but I feel that if we had stayed up that day Coppell would have transformed us into an established premierleague club. Survival then could have led to investment but no rebuilding. We would have been in a position to resign Shorey and Sidwell and not to sell Doyle and Kitson.

Compared to the Walsall game - we lost but went up stronger the next season and several other key promotion games, I guess this is 3rd. Brentford away? Well we would have gone up either in the playoffs or the next season. Wigan Cardiff and Stoke came up after us and did well.

I think I'd happily go with that, but I'd give an honourable mentionto Middlesborough, first game in the prem. Had Shorey not just thought "fack it" and gone on that mazey run that kick started us and stopped us playing like rabbits in headlights, I think we could have had a very disappointing first, and only, season in the Prem.

I also think had Coppell kept us up in the second season that he'd have left at the end of the season.

It will certainly be the biggest game in our history in terms of the attendance. I take Schards point re Brentford though. If we had blown promotion again that season it would have been a long struggle back.
Special mention for the Chesterfield game in 1989...last game of the season and 2-0 down. We won and avoided a second successive relegation which would have had us in the old fourth division. That was a big game.

In terms of finance yes, yet I still feel a little underwhelmed. Having now seen us at the top level and what it does to the players and their attitudes/commitment, promotion really doesn't fill me with the excitement and dreams it once did.

I reckon it depends on the definition of 'biggest'. Our first ever game in the prem against Boro' - now that was special. The atmosphere, the result - just everything about the day was unique.

Biggest game for RFC, yes.

A return to the premiership for a season with the parachute payments available for four years when we are relegated will keep us in a healthy state.

I am frankly stunned by fans saying they can't be arsed with the premiership
and they are happy to "compete" in the Championship.

How do you "compete" if you say you don't want to win the league?

Had the results of the first two been the other way round, would they also have appeared in your list the other way round? I'd suggest so.
