An Outsider’s Perspective
As the posters who I have talked with in the past will know, I’m brand new as a Reading supporter (in fact, brand new to following football). During the pre-season I joined in on a few topics, but since the start of the season I have become a less active poster and watched from a distance as I felt I don’t have a great knowledge of the game to say what’s wrong with us and what’s right.
However, ten games in and I thought I would post my thoughts so far.
Firstly, I can understand why sections of the support are frustrated (I have experienced similar panic during my support of Warrington Wolves), but I think we’re not in the dreadful place that some supporters would lead us to believe.
1.Quite simply, we’re one win from leaving the relegation zone…with a game in hand thanks to the postponed Sunderland game. The general feel I got during the pre-season debate was that as long as we end up higher than 18, we’ll all be happy. Well whilst it’s frustrating we haven’t won yet we’re still in the mix. The game in hand is a great bonus, but even without, three points is nothing. Where we stand, two or three wins propels the entire complexion of the table.
2.Yes it’s disappointing we haven’t won, but at least we’re not loosing that much either. The draws we’re collection could be vital and I’ll take them over a loss.
3.We do need additions to the squad come January, but not drastic changes. If we’re the same distance from safety as we are now come the transfer window, I’d be really happy. I would the plum for a defender, defensive midfielder, and a midfielder who sits just behind our attacking line who can join the solid midfield work and attacking line together.
4.LAY OFF POG! I’d never heard of him until I began my Reading adventure, but bottom line is he’s top scorer in all comps (doesn’t matter if none of them are 35 yard blinders) and boasts a comparable record against the attackers of some far superior clubs. He certainly adds to the team.
5.This weekend’s clean sheet will hopefully breathe some belief into the defence. Regardless of the opposition, a clean sheet is a clean shit…well done.
6.Wholesale changes aren’t the key. This would be detrimental to the hard working, grafting ethos of Brian Mac and the club. A couple of classy additions will do nicely.
To cut a long story short, the defence needs to step up. The midfield controls games reasonably well but struggles to link up nicely with the attack. Despite this we score plenty of goals. Two defensive players and a midfielder playing a “Scholes-esc” role in linking the midfield and attack and we’ll be ok.
From a novice view, we’re not that far off and will only improve. Still a way to go and we’re right in the mix.
Don’t lose sight of what we all wanted in the summer…higher than 18th!
