Players who have only scored one more league goal than ALF

by Greatwesternline » 15 Jan 2013 09:40

Dimitar Berbatov - Fulham
Santi Cazorla - Arsenal
Frank Lampard - Chelsea
Juan Mata - Chelsea
Wayne Rooney - Manchester United
Carlos Tevez - Manchester City
Fernando Torres - Chelsea

All are on 7 league goals compared to ALF's 6, as at 15/1/13

ALF does take pens, but then so do many of these players, additionally, these are high scoring teams who create lots of chances, and it's not as if ALF plays every game unlike some of the above.

Fairly impresive if you ask me.

And Pog is only oe behind.

Well done the boys

It's good, and not knocking ALF and Pog, but your list of 7 players includes 3 midfielders, and 4 strikers who have missed chunks of the season.

ALF has missed a big chunk of the season and Pog has missed a small chunk of the season - by sitting on the bench.

I am a huge fan of ALF and think not only his finishing but his movement is crucial for the rest of the team - but there are a fair few penos in there.

Also I don't like the "he takes penalties" argument, they still need to be put away.

It's only really an argument if its the only way he can score. Especially if they're mostly dubious, or won by someone else. But that doesn't really apply.

No true Reading fan who has supported us through the majority of the 00s would ever use that article. We've had Cureton, Kitson and now Alf as reliable takers; nobody else. Harte has a reputation, but look at his record from the spot for us. I swear we're always lacking in a decent taker; was it 2 scored out of 7 last season?

And Alf's have all mattered this season too; Stoke, Everton, WBA. Not like slotting one home when your team is 2 or 3 goals up a-la Lampard.

Good point, he's taken some real pressure ones this season.

I know Long had a reputation for being bad at penalties, but didn't his record end up being quite good?

I wonder whether Pog would have scored those penalties. He'd be on a really impressive tally if he had.

*sigh*

HALF of Le Fondre's goals have been penalties. If Sean Morrison had taken & scored those pens he'd be one behind on 5.

I completely agree, but look at the helmet above me who has litearlly argued that exact same thing!
Even after last season's penalty taking shambles (Barnsley springs to my mind as the most  moment, that and Roberts against brizzle ) its really nice to see Alf slotting them away. What I like as well are that they all look like good penalties (well surely if you score its a good penalty), what i mean is they are either very well placed/timed or hit really well and with a lot of confidence.

And the chances of Morrison, Pearce Gorkss etc scoring those 3 pens are nil.

*sigh*

That's why we call these players centre backs.

I agree that he is a good penalty taker. His scoring record minus pens isn't great this season. I don't see why everyone clouds the situation by muddling them together.

You reckon it's IMPOSSIBLE for a professional footballer to score 3 penalties in a row? More fool you. Centre backs can take penalties too...

Average number of pens scored in the Prem is around 7-8%, that we've scored 11.5% isn't because Le Fondre's a great goalscorer, it's because we've either won more penalties than we're in for or we're better at winning penalties than other teams. HTH, you helmets

Alf's great, and held his nerve brilliantly to score at least a couple of those penalties. He deserves the praise if people start commenting on how well he has done. My nephew said he was the second-top-scoring English forward in the Premiership when I met him at Christmas - that was a brilliant statistic.

Clubs who have only won one more European Cup than Reading:
Celtic
Hamburg
Steaua București
Marseille
Chelsea
Feyenoord
Aston Villa
PSV
Red Star Belgrade
Borussia Dortmund

Tell that to David Unsworth, Gary Alexander (at times), Andre Bikey, Ezequiel Garay, David Luiz, Vedran Corluka, Rio Ferdinand...
