Extended-Phenotype
Nameless Has anyone looked carefully at the injuries and how they were actually caused ? Jem's was obviously an impact injury, McCleary's sounds like wear and tear , Williams a long term thing that didn't respond to treatment. Pog got a dead leg in a game, how many are actually training related or in other ways preventable ?

I'm not arguing either way, just would be interested in the facts !

The facts are we have a longer injury list than our matchday team sheet and the chances of this being down to coincidence is millions to one.

And ?

If it's not coincidence the chances are it's a whole load of other reasons. The chances of it all being caused by a rogue physio or a malevolent elf are billions to one, just thought it might be of interest to see whether there is any pattern. Aware you are only interested in the Lols though.....

Er, not suggesting Nigel or some sort of mystical pixie is sneaking into players houses at night and injecting ketamine into their joints, though I appreciate a straw man as much as the next guy. I'm just doubtful that the dumbfounding number of injuries, niggles, strains and pulls can be down to sheer bad luck and that the common denominator would be the fitness regime and training methods.

My biggest concern on this subject are the four players who were injured at the end of last season and still are.

McCleary - why was his extremely serious injury not diagnosed properly ?
Williams - he had an operation on his injury at the end of last season and, although rushing him back wouldn't have helped, why did he have to have a second operation ?
Guthrie - why has he still got the same problem that he had as he had last season ? Although players and staff go on holiday why was this an apparent surprise to the staff when the player reported back for training ? Did the player feel any discomfort when he was responsible for his own fitness regime ?

I broadly applaud the fact that they are not rushing Karacan back but am starting to feel concerned that I have seen no recent reports on his progress, something that at one time was happening.

Although the midfield situation is desperate without all these players the fact that, rather than look for loan signings to cover the emergency, we've signed a midfielder on a 'permanent' basis and that we're reportedly trying for another makes me expect even more bad news about one or two of these players.

As for the other injuries, most do seem to have happened in a match situation. Hopefully the fitness staff will have noted it if a pattern is emerging for the ones that have happened in training.

Looks like it's not that simple though. There doesn't seem an obvious common factor. They aren't all knee injuries, or hamstring strains. Really quite a wide variety. Agree coincidence is not a good reason, but it's almost always a better one than any kind of conspiracy theory. I'd suspect that the most likely common issue is the way injuries are diagnosed, treated and managed rather than how they are caused in the first place.

It's not a conspiracy theory. It's a suggestion that in light of an alarming number of injuries, we should wonder if we are doing something wrong in our training and fitness programmes.

Goes from bad to worse

@ReadingFC: Manager Nigel Adkins says @s_cummings89 and @nblackman89 won't feature on Saturday and will have scans on knee injuries today.

Charles Watts @charles_watts
Blackman and Cummings having MRI scans on their knees, expected to be out for several weeks #readingfc.
Amazingly, #readingfc would have 16 players unavailable through injury if they were playing a match today.

The definition of insanity is doing something over and over again and expecting different results.

Time to change the training/sack somebody Nige?

Do we have enough players left for a full squad on Saturday? I don't expect U18s to be included, that would be just silly.

It must be the training methods. I've never known anything like this. Unless it really is just bad luck.

Is Tarique Fosu-Henry our only fit winger? Apart from Drenthe of course (madness that he isn't being used)

Lots of knee injuries now - from what I've been told in the past, you are far more susceptible to these if the relevant leg muscles aren't strong enough. Pre-season conditioning not good enough?

Some people really have a weird obsession with Drenthe, he will have to turn over a massive oxf*rd leaf before he ever even gets close to the Reading team again, his history speaks for itself, a swift decline from Real Madrid to Reading, causing problems wherever he goes.

The club have been 100% right to freeze him out, as for wingers, we have Edwards and Mackie can play on the wing.
