MATCHWATCH : Huddersfield Town (a)

by Sutekh » 04 May 2023 08:10

When : Monday, 8th May 2023, 3pm
Where : John Smith's Stadium, Huddersfield, HD1 6PX
Capacity 24,121

Cup final day is on the horizon and this time next week we’ll nearly all be used to the season’s outcome and already fed up with the boredom of the close season. However, what is quite clear, unless Huddersfield get a point or better v Sheffield United, is that this is the definitive MUST WIN game! Yes Noel and the boys will have to go out and look for a win away from home, something not managed by the club in recent memory (and even the last occasion that it did occur the opponents still scored more goals than Reading).

Form for Huddersfield is, before their game with the Blades, something of which Reading could only dream with 4 wins and just 1 defeat in their last 7 games. Reading’s form meanwhile is just utterly atrocious with 0 wins from 12 games and just 1 point from the last 27 points available on the road.

A big threat for the Terriers seems to be defender Matthew Pearson who is equal leading scorer with 5 goals, this, of course, suggests there is some skill at set pieces that Reading will have to manage and therefore try not to give too much away. Jordan Rhodes is the other 5 goal pain that Reading will need to cover and so too Danny Ward on 4 goals.

Supposedly on Huddersfield’s injury list are Anthony Knockaert, Yuma Nakayama, Kieran Phillips, Duane Holmes, Oliver Turton and Faustino Anjorin while Reading will welcome back Andy Carroll after his suspension.

Really don’t know what Reading’s management team are going to do for this, IF survival is still a possibility then Reading have to go for a win so there won’t be much point in being all negative and defensive but the problem as ever will be the lack of creativity and ideas in the team, if Noel can somehow find a solution to that (thinking set piece management is possibly the only realistic option - but that requires practice on the training ground something I’m not convinced the club have been doing at all this season) then mission impossible might become a success.

Referee

Joshua Smith

Previously

14 Aug 21 > Reading 2-1 Preston North End
12 Sep 20 > Reading 3-1 Colchester United (League Cup)

Historically

The playing record here is rather better than you'd expect for an awkward long trek up north. Of the 25 league seasons shared (all since 1976) Reading have managed 10 wins to Huddersfield's 12.

The last couple of visits there though have been an utter disaster producing 2 defeats and 6 conceded.

How to follow the game

  1. Get a ticket and travel
  2. There may be a possibility of this one being televised by SKY (probably depends on how much they want Reading relegated given Reading’s utterly cr@p record on the box). Check listings etc. for confirmation
  3. Listen to Radio 5 Live and/or a myriad of other radio stations for score flashes
  4. Ring/text a mate for updates
  5. Use a RoyalsTV subscription
  6. BBC Radio Berkshire (FM : 104.4, 104.1 or 95.4 depending where you are in the area)

good preview as usual, but it should have waited until after tonight's match. That changes everything

We should be avoiding playing anyone who won't be here next season if at all possible if we're down.

Survival side:
....................Lumley
Yiadom, Holmes, Sarr, NGW
...................McIntyre
.........Casadei......Fornah
....Meite.........................Hoilett
......................Joao

Relegated side:
....................Andresson
Abrefa, Mbengue, Holmes, NGW
......................McIntyre
...Azeez, Craig*, Fornah, Camara
.......................Carroll

*Casadei if injured.

How annoying is it now that Huddersfield only avoided administration (and subsequent 12 point deduction) by the former chairman writing off £40m of debt owed when he sold the club. Just been one basket case club too few cornered this season, though all hell might break out in the Championship next season.

Do find it a bit weird that Loum hasn’t played a minute under Hunt. Obviously he is wildly inconsistent but has had some great games as well. And an actual midfielder not a CB playing out of position in must win games

If we have a chance would go something like

Lumley
Yiadom Holmes Sarr NGW
Azeez Loum Casadei Hoilett
Joao Carroll

Don’t really want Hoilett in there but lacking options - maybe Camara

Hunt won’t though

Obviously all depends on tonight's results, but this is what my team would be regardless.

Lumley
Yiadom Holmes Sarr NGW
Hoilett Hendrick McIntyre Azeez
Joao Carroll

We've got a couple of options in midfield. I can't see Loum being used, Fornah I'm not convinced with so I think McIntyre and Hendrick could make for a good shield in front of the defence to allow Yiadom and NGW to get forward, especially considering we will have to win. Get our full backs forward with the wide players, stretch the game and swing some crosses in. Could even swap Hoilett and Azeez so that they can go on the inside and the full backs can overlap. Plenty of height in the side so we can be strong from set pieces as well.

Checked Hoilett’s stats, 2 assists in 2 years and 50 starts. None this season. I’m not too sure why he walks back into the team, esp as an attacking option

Actually to be fair, I completely forgot about Meite, I'd probably put him in on the right side rather than Hoilett. Would give us more strength going forward down that side. Hoilett would give us a little bit more defensively than Meite and would be able to get up and down, he would be able to give us a decent hour I suppose.

Thought Meite looked unfit Saturday. Don’t think he offered a lot other than the goal - would keep him on the bench and hope he did similar against Huddersfield

Since he’s joined, Ince has had 0 assists from open play. He has a reputation for being the “only one” who can create something, yet those figures suggest otherwise

He has chipped in with some goals and has whipped in some inviting corners but we’ve needed more from these two in terms of supplying the strikers. Hoilett has been poor since October and Ince poor since December, been one of the (many) reasons for our downfall

Read somewhere that one of the loan players had shown a poor attitude as they knew they'd not be at Reading next season. Putting two and two together this could be Loum.

Well he's spent pretty much all this season playing as a wingback in a team with no possession or opportunity to get forward.

He wasn’t great first game back from injury, but normally he's one of our best crossers, and also one of only 2 fit senior wide forward.

What happens if the takeover collapses and they go into administration? Considering entering this takeover transition period supposedly staved off administration would we have a case should the deduction be deferred to next season?

Yes I'm clutching at straws.

Plus he'd only have got himself booked enough to be suspended anyway!

They've agreed the sale but it hasn't been completed yet.

Yeah you mentioned the ince stats before which was a bit of a surprise but interesting

Who does create our assists from open play? Carroll must have a few. Azeez from set pieces

Maybe a big part of why we are where we are

Really? Well there's only 4 days left of the season so if they did go into admin after it ends they'd presumably just pick up the deduction next season, but that would be gutting for Reading if the expected happens.
