5-1 Away Wins

by sg1961 » 25 Apr 2025 10:11

I was quite surprised to see just how rare 5-1 away wins have been in our history, in fact, Monday's was our first since 1979 and only our third ever in a football league game. Here is the complete record:

Season Date Competition Opponents Venue Result Attendance Scorers
1935-36 09-Nov Division 3 S Newport a 5-1 6,471 Paterson, Liddle 2, Tait, Briggs (og)
1941-42 20-Dec War League Brighton & HA a 5-1 2,400 Edelston 3, MacPhee, Chitty
1942-43 06-Mar War League Millwall a 5-1 5,525 MacPhee 2, Patterson, Bradley, Busby
1943-44 18-Sep War League Crystal Palace a 5-1 7,467 MacPhee 2, Edelston, Patterson, Williams
1969-70 24-Nov Division 3 Tranmere a 5-1 3,870 Jenkins 3, Chappell, Williams
1979-80 11-Aug League Cup Oxford a 5-1 5,387 Kearney, Earles 2, oxf*rd, J Williams
2024-25 21-Apr League 1 Mansfield a 5-1 Wareham 2, Williams (og), Wing, Bodin

Wad at the Oxf*rd cup game in 1979, pretty sure Oxf*rd scored first and it was 1-1 at half time.

The Tranmere game was following a 6-2 defeat to Southport, and Tom Jenkins last game before he was sold to Southampton for £60k, was our record transfer sale I think until we sold Neil Webb to Portsmouth more than a decade later.

Was surprised that the the 2005/06 record setters couldn't best this. We scored five on five occasions that season, four at home, the away win being 5-2 at Cardiff.

Fwiw our last away victory by a margin of four goals came only last season, when we beat Millwall 4-0 in the League Cup, when of course we also won 9-0 at Exeter. So this was 'only' our biggest away win for 18 months.
