My initial thoughts were ffs this is dreadful. But on second thoughts and looking at his stats 1 in 4 in league one I’m ok with this. I think. It’s a difficult position really who is going to want to come and sit on the bench behind Marriott. Either a youngster or someone at the end of their career at 32 we can probably get a couple of seasons out of him and getting a 1 in 4 striker in as a back up is probably the best we could hope for.

I have to agree. Although (as someone pointed out on a different thread) if Marriott's fit, he's our first choice. We'll struggle to get a properly inspiring striker in, as most would want to be the first choice.

Should be okay for a season (perhaps a 1+1), given he's just turned thirty-two.

I tend to block out all of the bravado from the owners and I don’t see this as a bad signing. Although I don’t believe we’ll finish top 6 I do feel that our best 13/14 players are good enough to compete with anyone in L1.

If Azeez gets sold maybe that cash will be used in January to strengthen the squad. It was never going to be a quick fix so my expectations are fairly low, but you just never know in football.

This would leave Reading with two strikers with a combined age of 63!

The best thing I can see about him is that in his 5 seasons at Stevenage he’s played in 211 of their 230 league games (approx. a 97% availability record) so might last as many as 5 games before we break him

Be good if he was as well as Kanu but this smacks of Rob trying to pull off the same trick twice. No doubt we’ll get Jamie Vardy next season. Probably cost more than he’d like though as Stevenage will probably want a premium for letting their main striker go this late in the window.

Probably play like Susanna if we sign him though.

We are recruiting for a guy to basically come and sit on the bench and fill in for the 10/15 games that Marriott will likely miss.

We look like are signing a striker who was top scorer for a side who made the L1 play-offs last season to essentially sit on the bench and come on with 25 mins left to give us a different option up top. A player who has also been first choice in their opening 2 games and only missed the weekend as it is clear he is leaving.

Yes it would be preferable if he were a bit younger but if he signs we will have the 7th and 11th top scorers in League 1 last season as our 2 main options, Brown as 3rd choice and then a young talent in Patton (when fit) to challenge them. Evans loan has now ended and if not extended (or moves elsewhere) then we have a decent mix of experience and youth challenging for 1 spot.

There won't be many clubs in this division with strikers of that standard (Marriott and Reid) competing for the starting spot. We do now actually have a play-off strength squad, we just need the manager to get the performances out of them.

So his most recent career then including season where he managed 18 and 14 goals - his weakest season saw him score 8.

I know it's "cool" to be down on any signing but people need to remember we are in L1 - we finished below Stevenage in both seasons where he was their top scorer - and we look set to sign their main source of goals to come and sit on our bench.

This is a signing to help us get in a position to get promoted, it is not a signing for the Championship.

This is the L1 equivalent of us finishing 12th in the Championship and then signing the top scorer from one of the losing play-off semi finalists. People would be praising the move if we were still up a level.

And one of those was only 7th because he missed half the season injured so actually better strikers than that. He’d be a solid signing and you can’t really argue then that you don’t have a second option. Get the impression he’s a similar style to Marriott? Which I presume would be a good thing.

Solid signing for a mid table League 1 side, which is what we now are and will be for a while. It's only a negative if you are under the misapprehension that we are currently a club good enough to challenge at the top, which we are not.

We are where we are, and we are going to have to take a hit on something with every player we sign, be that fitness, experience, skills or age. The latter isn’t the worst stat to take a hit on. If he does a job for us while we develop other players, build our reputation, or fix our finances, great.

The point has been made on X that if we're down to plan C or D, an experienced L1 player who has shown they can play 40+ a season and get almost 1 goal in 3 is better business than a loanee who is scoring a goal a game in some PL U23 academy.

There will certainly be a lot of hesitation in signing a PL2 striker after the experience with MOM last year.
